The Presentation Of The King

The Presentation Of The King

Our Text:

Matthew Chapter 21

We are now reaching the beginning of the end of the time God remained in the flesh on this Earth. As Jesus enters Jerusalem, it will be witnessed by great multitudes of people.

Many have said that Jesus was carried away by enthusiasm and expected Jerusalem to receive Him as the Messiah-King but this is not true.

Others have explained His entry into Jerusalem as a concession to the Messianic expectations of the scriptures about the disciples.

These things dishonor the One who came to save us all. Christ Jesus was and is King and He came to Jerusalem to fulfill the prophesies..

We will also see that Our Lord revealed the sin of Israel and how He explained why the religious leaders not only rejected Him but they also rejected His message.

To set the stage we must remember that from the time of Israel's redemption from Egypt, the annual slaying of the passover lamb looked forward to the Lamb of God. It's also interesting to note that as they looked forward, we can now look back, as the Lamb of God paid the supreme price for our sin. We can now look forward to going home one day soon. It is by His sacrifice that redemption would be provided for "all" that were and are in bondage to sin.

The Law of Moses required all Jews to observe the Passover Feast:

Exo 12:1 And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,

Exo 12:2 This month shall be unto you the beginning of months: it shall be the first month of the year to you.

Exo 12:3 Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth day of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of their fathers, a lamb for an house:

Exo 12:4 And if the household be too little for the lamb, let him and his neighbour next unto his house take it according to the number of the souls; every man according to his eating shall make your count for the lamb.

Exo 12:5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats:

Exo 12:6 And ye shall keep it up until the fourteenth day of the same month: and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening.

Exo 12:7 And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it.

Exo 12:8 And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it.

Exo 12:9 Eat not of it raw, nor sodden at all with water, but roast with fire; his head with his legs, and with the purtenance thereof.

Exo 12:10 And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire.

Exo 12:11 And thus shall ye eat it; with your loins girded, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and ye shall eat it in haste: it is the LORD'S passover.

Exo 12:12 For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.

Exo 12:13 And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be upon you to destroy you, when I smite the land of Egypt.

Exo 12:14 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial; and ye shall keep it a feast to the LORD throughout your generations; ye shall keep it a feast by an ordinance for ever.

What we do find is that some common people, who should have been giving their attention to the "rituals" of this feast, were in fact directing that attention to Jesus Christ.

The conflict between Jesus and all religious leaders was well known throughout the land. The Jewish leaders saw the Passover as an opportune time to put Jesus to death.

Their reasoning was that if Israel accepted Jesus as the Messiah and He instituted a kingdom, Rome would move in and destroy this kingdom. It seemed better to these leaders that "One" man should die rather than the whole nation perish.

These people felt that this would be their last chance and maybe their only chance to kill Jesus.

Joh 11:48 If we let him thus alone, all men will believe on him: and the Romans shall come and take away both our place and nation.

Joh 11:49 And one of them, named Caiaphas, being the high priest that same year, said unto them, Ye know nothing at all,

Joh 11:50 Nor consider that it is expedient for us, that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation perish not.

Joh 11:51 And this spake he not of himself: but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus should die for that nation;

Joh 11:52 And not for that nation only, but that also he should gather together in one the children of God that were scattered abroad.

Joh 11:53 Then from that day forth they took counsel together for to put him to death.

They had also decided to kill Lazarus who was evidence of the power of Christ Jesus:

Joh 12:9 Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there: and they came not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also, whom he had raised from the dead.

Joh 12:10 But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death;

Joh 12:11 Because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus.

The time of Daniel's prophecy was unfolding:

Dan 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

Dan 9:25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.

Dan 9:26 [And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself]: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

Dan 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

Our Text:

Mat 21:1 And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples,

Mat 21:2 Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.

Mat 21:3 And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them.

Mat 21:4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,

Mat 21:5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.

"Bethpage" means "house of the unripe figs"

In typology this city represents the nation of Israel at this time, the unripe fruit not ready to be picked.

Compare this to the second coming of the Lord when the world will be "over ripe" to the point of rotten fruit.

Rev 14:18 And another angel came out from the altar, which had power over fire; and cried with a loud cry to him that had the sharp sickle, saying, Thrust in thy sharp sickle, and gather the clusters of the vine of the earth; [for her grapes are fully ripe].

It is estimated that there were at least 2 million people in Jerusalem at this time. We will see that Jesus for possibly the first time planned and promoted a public demonstration. Jesus had normally avoided public scenes!

Why did He do this?

He was being obedient to the Word of God:

Isa 62:11 Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.

Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

This prophecy can only apply to Jesus for He was the only One that could prove He was heir to the throne of David!

Luk 1:31 And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.

Luk 1:32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:

Luk 1:33 And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

At this time all records were kept at the Temple and this could be proven!

It was documented and never questioned!

In our day we would not associate the donkey as a royal animal but they were at this time in Palestine. The King would have his special mule and they still had the War horse but the donkey was used more daily matters.

There were actually two animals, the mother and the colt. Jesus sat on the colt with the mother walking alongside.

Notice how Matthew quoted the scripture of Zachariah:

Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

compare:

Mat 21:5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass.

Matthew omitted the phrase "rejoice greatly" but wrote that when Jesus approached the city "He wept".

It was not the time for rejoicing as judgment was soon coming.

70 A D Titus destroyed Jerusalem.

Matthew also omitted the words:

"He is just and having salvation"

Jesus came this time in "Mercy" and in "Grace".

Jesus had salvation but they had refused to accept it.

Joh 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

The next time they see Jesus it will be in a much different manner:

Rev 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

Rev 19:12 His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.

Rev 19:13 And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God.

*****Our Text:

Mat 21:6 And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them,

Mat 21:7 And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon.

Mat 21:8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way.

Mat 21:9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

Mat 21:10 And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying, Who is this?

Mat 21:11 And the multitude said, This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.

Christ had revealed His "omniscience" when these animals were found just as Jesus had said.

"Omniscience" is God's quality of knowing all things at once. We could say God has universal knowledge but in actuality His power is greater than that as we can see in His creation.

As Jesus was showing His authority over His creation, He was also fulfilling His prophetic word. Every detail of the prophets would be fulfilled by the Lord Jesus Christ which is another reason we can believe all else is written in God's Word.

As Christ Jesus sat on this colt we can see His "omnipotence". His unlimited power over all His creation.

It can be seen that a great multitude recognized this incident as the fulfillment of the prophecy of the Messiah!

We cannot know how many people could have been in Jerusalem at this time but there was a historian who was not a believer named Josephus who wrote that there were 256,500 lambs that were sacrificed which some say is a low estimate but if you figured a lamb for every ten persons then that would be just under 2,700,000 persons.

Since Jerusalem could not have held that many people with housing we can be sure that all the roads leading to Jerusalem and any open ground would be covered with the tents of the visitors.

They responded, shouting "Hosanna"!

This word means: Save Now! Save Now!

Psa 118:23 This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.

Psa 118:24 This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Psa 118:25 Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.

Psa 118:26 Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.

This phrase was common to every feast of the Passover but it was directed at Jesus Christ the Savior on this day.

We know that the Pharisees objected to this jubilation and asked the Lord to silence these people.

Luk 19:39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.

Jesus told these sinful men that He did not need the people to respond this way if they chose not too but that He had the power to create stones with voices!

Luk 19:40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.

Verse 10 tells us that the City was moved by the Lord entering the city but we also know that it was Jesus Christ that knew their hearts and we get the tears of sadness from our Lord.

Luk 19:41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,

Remember God had revealed a specific time in the Book of Daniel for these events.

Some things we have learned in our study of Matthew:

1.) Jesus Christ was identified as King of Israel at "His birth".

2.) Jesus Christ was identified with the nation of Israel at "His Baptism".

3.) Jesus Christ was authenticated as the Messiah at "His temptation".

4.) Jesus Christ showed forth His Glory at "His Transfiguration".

5.) It is at this time of of His triumphant entry that Jesus Christ presented Himself to Israel as "The Messiah".

6.) We can see that "The Prince of Peace" was not recognized at this time:

Luk 19:42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, [at least in this thy day], the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.

The City asked:

Who is this?

Every human being that walks the face of this earth will have to ask this question of themselves before their death. After death each one of us will know the answer!

Who is Jesus Christ and what does He mean to me?

The children of Israel answered this day in terms of rejection. Instead of their King, instead of Jehovah, instead of the Messiah they answered:

"This is Jesus the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee"

No doubt a great honor to some human but not to the Almighty God.

Peter had said:

Mat 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, [Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God].

The woman at the well had said:

Joh 11:27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: [I believe that thou art the Christ], the Son of God, which should come into the world.

There were at least four groups of people in this Passover crowd.

1.) The Jews who lived in Jerusalem.

2.) The crowd that came from Galilee.

3.) The people that had seen the raising of Lazarus.

4.) No doubt there were many visitors from many nations.

Act 2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

Act 2:9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,

Act 2:10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,

Act 2:11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

The people wanted to see this miracle worker for themselves.

The Jews were spiritually blind because their own leaders had robbed them of the truth of their own WORD and had substituted "Man-Made" traditions.

These leaders were not interested in the truth, they were only concerned with protecting their own interest.

The world is just the same today when it comes to Jesus.

To be saved we must answer this question individually.

Who Is Jesus To You?

Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

If Jesus Christ is not the Savior to this world then we all are bound for hell for there is no other means of salvation.

Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Joh 14:7 If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.

*****Our text:

Mat 21:12 And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,

Mat 21:13 And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

Mat 21:14 And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.

Mat 21:15 And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore displeased,

Mat 21:16 And said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?

The purpose of the court of the Gentiles was to give the heathen outcasts an opportunity to enter the Temple and learn of the God of Israel, the true God of this world. Historians tell us that Annas the former high priest had changed this area into a commercial enterprise.

This place that was set aside to win converts to Judaism, was changed into a place where foreign Jews could exchange money and purchase sacrifices. In this place none other could compete nor oppose this lucrative business. No doubt many Gentiles were turned off to the religion of the Jews.

Are we sometimes guilty of this in our own places of worship? I believe we are.

Watch Jesus:

"My house"

Jesus said "I AM God" with this simple statement.

"My house shall be called the house of prayer"

Jesus then gave the purpose of this Temple and this place for the Gentiles that was originally built by Solomon.

Isa 56:6 Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant;

Isa 56:7 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.

Jesus continues to say:

"but ye have made it a den of thieves"

Jer 7:11 Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD.

A den is a place where robbers hide. These unfaithful leaders of Israel where trying to hide their sin.

We can see that God wants prayer in His house!

1Ti 2:1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

1Ti 2:2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

1Ti 2:3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

1Ti 2:4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

1Ti 2:5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

1Ti 2:6 Who gave himself a ransom for all, to be testified in due time.

We can see by the actions of the Lord that the House of God is a place of help to those that come. The needy should feel welcome no matter their nationality.

There should be the Power of God in His house working to change people.

There should be "Praise" for the only true God in His house.

Psa 8:1 O LORD our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth! who hast set thy glory above the heavens.

Psa 8:2 Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength because of thine enemies, that thou mightest still the enemy and the avenger.

What we can believe is that there is another Temple in Israel's future and the Lord will also cleanse out this one after it has been given over to the Gentiles:

2Th 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

2Th 2:4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

[Him, He will destroy with the brightness of the second coming of the Lord].

*****Our Text

Mat 21:17 And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there.

Mat 21:18 Now in the morning as he returned into the city, he hungered.

Mat 21:19 And when he saw a fig tree in the way, he came to it, and found nothing thereon, but leaves only, and said unto it, Let no fruit grow on thee henceforward for ever. And presently the fig tree withered away.

Mat 21:20 And when the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, How soon is the fig tree withered away!

Mat 21:21 Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done.

Mat 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

We next see Jesus had cleansed the Temple, and He would perform another act of judgment.

Jesus cursed a fig tree. Now this tree was His creation and therefore it was His tree but this also was contrary to His usual manner.

Jesus came first to save:

Joh 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

This world will be judged at His second coming.

Notice there was nothing morally wrong with this tree so we must realize Jesus was sending a message by example to Israel.

The fig tree symbolizes Israel:

Jer 8:13 I will surely consume them, saith the LORD: there shall be no grapes on the vine, [nor figs on the fig tree], and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.

Hos 9:10 I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; [I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig tree] at her first time: but they went to Baalpeor, and separated themselves unto that shame; and their abominations were according as they loved.

To a fig tree the presence of leaves would indicate the presence of fruit. Now we know Jesus did not have to see that tree to know that it had no fruit. Jesus was saying in His teaching way that judgment was coming to Israel.

Israel was that fig tree and the leaves only covered her nakedness, much like Adam and Eve had tried to cover their own nakedness. Sin can only be covered by the Blood.

Israel was barren of fruit when searched by the Lord. This tree was taking up space, using the blessings of the Lord(the rain and sunshine) and producing no fruit.

This again is illustrated in a parable:

Luk 13:6 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.

Luk 13:7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?

Luk 13:8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:

Luk 13:9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

Jesus continued to teach the disciples. Here He taught a practical lesson in faith and prayer.

1.) The Temple was suppose to be a House of Prayer.

2.) The Nation of Israel was supposed to be a believing people.

Both of these things were missing. These things if missing in our lives will always bring fruitlessness. God expects all His children to be fruitful.

*****Our Text:

Mat 21:23 And when he was come into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came unto him as he was teaching, and said, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority?

Mat 21:24 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I also will ask you one thing, which if ye tell me, I in like wise will tell you by what authority I do these things.

Mat 21:25 The baptism of John, whence was it? from heaven, or of men? And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say unto us, Why did ye not then believe him?

Mat 21:26 But if we shall say, Of men; we fear the people; for all hold John as a prophet.

Mat 21:27 And they answered Jesus, and said, We cannot tell. And he said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

Mat 21:28 But what think ye? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first, and said, Son, go work to day in my vineyard.

Mat 21:29 He answered and said, I will not: but afterward he repented, and went.

Mat 21:30 And he came to the second, and said likewise. And he answered and said, I go, sir: and went not.

Mat 21:31 Whether of them twain did the will of his father? They say unto him, The first. Jesus saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That the publicans and the harlots go into the kingdom of God before you.

Mat 21:32 For John came unto you in the way of righteousness, and ye believed him not: but the publicans and the harlots believed him: and ye, when ye had seen it, repented not afterward, that ye might believe him.

After Jesus had cleaned out the Court of the Gentiles the day before and as He returned to the

Temple, He was met by the chief priests and the elders.

We will witness as Christ Jesus again teaches with parables. Why did He use parables?

Mat 13:10 And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?

Mat 13:11 He answered and said unto them, Because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.

Mat 13:12 For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.

Mat 13:13 Therefore speak I to them in parables: because they seeing see not; and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.

These men were the custodians of God's House and they should have asked when men came to

preach in the Temple but Jesus had given them three years of His ministry and they refused the facts of God's Word.

A lesson we can learn here is that we should be cautious at everyone that wants to preach in God's House.

Gal 1:8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

Gal 1:9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

Jesus Christ had the right doctrine. God's Word was rejected by these that ministered to the Temple. These people wanted to see more evidence but they had seen many miracles of healing the day before.

John the Baptist had prepared the way for Jesus. If these rulers had received the ministry of John, which was also from the prophets of the Old Testament, they would have received the message of Christ Jesus.

John had preached the truth but these rulers had allowed John to be killed by Herod.

How are we going to act when the governments of this world take our Pastors and our Preachers of the truth and lock them behind bars for preaching and teaching the truth. Are we going to stand with them or are we going to be as these false teachers of Israel and give in to their evilness. It's coming soon to America and already in a lot of this world. We need to decide now. In fact we should have made that decision the day we got saved!

It is a basic principle of Christian living that we cannot learn new truth if we do not obey what God has already taught us!

Joh 7:16 Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.

Joh 7:17 If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.

Joh 7:18 He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

The message of John was rejected so Jesus could not impart any knew truth. We live, breath and die by God's Word. God gives us the freedom to choose but when we choose His way then we must walk in His way.

Christ Jesus was and is the King, the Messiah, the Son of God and He was about His Father's business. That was His authority and it still is!

The Church has this same authority as God's children.

Jesus began to teach His disciples in full view of these men.

1.) These Pharisees and elders claimed to be sons of the kingdom simply because they were the children of Abraham. If we go back to the Book of Genesis we can find that Palestine is full of the descendants of Abraham even in our day.

Jesus teaches us that sonship comes from obedience!

This parable that begins at verse 28 gives us the true meaning of "repentance". It is one of the best examples of true repentance throughout all the scriptures.

True repentance begins when we change our direction (Vs 29) and go in the direction that God tells us to go, thus obeying God's Word. Repentance is not just feeling sorry for the wrong we did. Repentance takes an action on our part, a physical action that can be seen by others. This is the first act of witnessing and it should begin the very first day of our salvation and be noticeable to others especially those that are lost. If they can see no difference in our lives they will never be believers.

Jesus Christ had demonstrated that He was willing to accept all sinners, "whosoever", into His family. These leaders of Israel would not even admit that they were sinners and therefore they refused to come to Him for salvation. This is still the same story throughout this world.

Luk 5:27 And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.

Luk 5:28 And he left all, rose up, and followed him.

Luk 5:29 And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.

Luk 5:30 But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?

Luk 5:31 And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.

Luk 5:32 I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

*****Our Text:

Mat 21:33 Hear another parable: There was a certain householder, which planted a vineyard, and hedged it round about, and digged a winepress in it, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country:

Mat 21:34 And when the time of the fruit drew near, he sent his servants to the husbandmen, that they might receive the fruits of it.

Mat 21:35 And the husbandmen took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.

Mat 21:36 Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did unto them likewise.

Mat 21:37 But last of all he sent unto them his son, saying, They will reverence my son.

Mat 21:38 But when the husbandmen saw the son, they said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and let us seize on his inheritance.

Mat 21:39 And they caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and slew him.

Mat 21:40 When the lord therefore of the vineyard cometh, what will he do unto those husbandmen?

Mat 21:41 They say unto him, He will miserably destroy those wicked men, and will let out his vineyard unto other husbandmen, which shall render him the fruits in their seasons.

2.) Jesus Christ will now teach the consequence of the Nation of Israel's rejection of Him as the Messiah.

The proof of this parable lies in the prophetic word of Isaiah:

Isa 5:1 Now will I sing to my wellbeloved a song of my beloved touching his vineyard. My wellbeloved hath a vineyard in a very fruitful hill:

Isa 5:2 And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.

Isa 5:3 And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem, and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard.

Isa 5:4 What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it? wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?

Isa 5:5 And now go to; I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard: I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up; and break down the wall thereof, and it shall be trodden down:

Isa 5:6 And I will lay it waste: it shall not be pruned, nor digged; but there shall come up briers and thorns: I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.

Isa 5:7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.

Jesus reminded these men of God's goodness.

a.) He had delivered them out of Egypt.

b.) He had given them the rich land of Palestine.

c.) He had given them material and spiritual blessings untold.

d.) He had sent His prophets from time to time to receive of their fruit.

They had rejected the prophets.

What should God do?

He could have sent His armies to destroy these wicked men But:

He sent His Own Son!

Heb 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Heb 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Heb 1:4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they. Heb 1:2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

Heb 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Heb 1:4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

His Son was not received but was cast out of the vineyard and killed:

Heb 13:12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, [suffered without the gate].

Heb 13:13 Let us go forth therefore unto him without the camp, bearing his reproach.

Jesus reminded these men who this parable was about:

Psa 118:22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.

Psa 118:23 This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.

*****Our Text:

Mat 21:42 Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

Mat 21:43 Therefore say I unto you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.

Mat 21:44 And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.

Mat 21:45 And when the chief priests and Pharisees had heard his parables, they perceived that he spake of them.

Mat 21:46 But when they sought to lay hands on him, they feared the multitude, because they took him for a prophet.

Jesus then opens to them the prophecy of Daniel:

Dan 2:34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.

Dan 2:45 Forasmuch as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and that it brake in pieces the iron, the brass, the clay, the silver, and the gold; the great God hath made known to the king what shall come to pass hereafter: and the dream is certain, and the interpretation thereof sure.

In the Old Testament, God is referred to as a "Rock":

Deu 32:4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he.

Jesus Christ was the stumbling stone to Israel:

Isa 8:13 Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.

Isa 8:14 And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

Isa 8:15 And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.

Isa 8:16 Bind up the testimony, seal the law among my disciples.

Isa 8:17 And I will wait upon the LORD, that hideth his face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for him.

Isa 8:18 Behold, I and the children whom the LORD hath given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwelleth in mount Zion.

Rom 9:32 Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;

Rom 9:33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

They refused to believe:

Paul wrote:

1Co 1:23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness;

1Co 1:24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.

Israel rejected the Messiah but in that rejection and His death and Resurrection, He created the Church.

To the Church, Jesus is the foundation stone, the corner stone:

Eph 2:20 And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

Eph 2:21 In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

Eph 2:22 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

The Church is now full of "living stones" of God:

1Pe 2:4 To whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious,

1Pe 2:5 Ye also, [as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house], an holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.

At the end of this Church Age Jesus will come as the smiting stone:

Dan 2:34 Thou sawest till that a stone was cut out without hands, which smote the image upon his feet that were of iron and clay, and brake them to pieces.

At the second coming of Christ all governments will be destroyed and King Jesus will rule just as He has told these Pharisees and elders of Israel:

1Pe 2:6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded.

1Pe 2:7 Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,

1Pe 2:8 And a stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence, even to them which stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed.

1Pe 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:

1Pe 2:10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Jesus separates these two events by the Church Age. The time that we now live in. This time will not last much longer!

When the chief priests and elders heard this parable they realized that Jesus has spoken of them.

Is Jesus speaking to you today? If so all He ask us to do is believe on Him and His Word of Truth.

Let's Pray!

The Rewards Of The King

The Rewards Of The King

Text: Matthew 19, 20

When Jesus departed from Galilee this time it would be His last time. The "Cross" was drawing nigh. From Galilee He traveled the route on the East of Jordan to Jerusalem. In Perea, known as "the land beyond" He told us some things about divorce.

The first thing we should keep in mind is, whenever Christ departs, we should always be with Him. That's where the rewards are earned. We should always travel with Jesus Christ in our hearts.

Mal 4:2 [But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall].

Mal 4:3 And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts.

Jesus is continuing to teach about life between His rejection and His second coming. This is the time we live in today, the Church until the Rapture and Israel until the second coming of Christ Jesus. Natural relationships are not to be set aside or dissolved during this time. It is in the "Epistles" that God's Word gives instructions to the Church of husbands and wives and children and always after "Salvation". It is in the Word of God where we learn that the life of Christ is in love, patience, meekness, and forbearance and He makes known these things to us.

Our Text:

Mat 19:1 And it came to pass, that when Jesus had finished these sayings, he departed from Galilee, and came into the coasts of Judaea beyond Jordan;

Mat 19:2 And great multitudes followed him; and he healed them there.

Mat 19:3 The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause?

Mat 19:4 And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,

Mat 19:5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

Mat 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Mat 19:7 They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?

Mat 19:8 He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.

Mat 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

Mat 19:10 His disciples say unto him, If the case of the man be so with his wife, it is not good to marry.

Mat 19:11 But he said unto them, All men cannot receive this saying, save they to whom it is given.

Mat 19:12 For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother's womb: and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men: and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven's sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.

We should realize that the Pharisees had tried to set another trap to ensnare the Lord Jesus Christ.

We should realize that at the time of Jesus these Pharisees were divided on two different opinions.

1.) The opinion of Head Pharisee Hillel:

This head Pharisee taught that for almost any reason any man could put away his wife by divorce.

Some of these rules are still followed by extremely orthodox Jews.

An example:

If the wife cooks her husbands food badly or by over salting that food or over roasting that food, these were grounds for divorce.

2.) The opinion of Head Pharisee Shammai:

No divorce was permitted except in the case of adultery.

When Jesus spoke, He ignored both stands and refers back to Genesis, which by the way He authenticates creation as it is written in the Book of Genesis.

Gen 2:22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man.

Gen 2:23 And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.

Gen 2:24 Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Mat 19:6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Jesus passed over all their scholastic teaching and He ignored their different opinions and He did not say a word about the "Law" as it was given to Moses.

Jesus simply says that marriage is a divinely instituted relationship, instituted by the Creator. This answer is an argument to all frivolous divorce and even polygamy.

The Bible teaches us how Our Lord feels about marriage:

Eph 5:28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

Eph 5:29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church:

Eph 5:30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

Eph 5:31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

Eph 5:32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.

Eph 5:33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

The right to divorce was highly prized by the Jews. They considered divorce a gift from God and that God certainly denied this great gift to the Gentiles. These Pharisees knew if Jesus Christ denied the Jews the right to divorce he would alienate Himself from Israel.

We can see that these Pharisees already knew what the Bible taught and had suspected this answer from Christ. This they also knew He would alienate Herod, just as the preaching of John the Baptist had done.

Just as we see in our life time, the Pharisees viewed marriage "as a social institution" governed by the laws of men.

This creates the same problem when two men or two women can be recognized as a marriage!

Christ sees marriage "as divine in the eyes of God" and governed by the laws of God!

The Christian view of a marriage between one man and one woman will always be in conflict with the worldly view of relationships.

We absolutely cannot test drive relationships like we do automobiles. We have to take more time to find that certain one and make life long commitments.

The Bible states that two become one. A "One" cannot be divided. Christ then told these men that divorce had not originated from God but had come from Moses. That divorce became necessary because men had hardened their own hearts.

If we can remember the Pharaoh of the Book of Exodus, we can know that his heart was so hardened that it took the death of his own son to realize his foolishness and release the children of Israel and it still cost him his own life because he could not release his own remorse.

Christ startled every one that listened when He said these words:

Mat 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, [except it be for fornication], and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.

Jesus Christ was referring to the Jewish customs of marriage. Marriage was begun by drawing up a legal contract between the father of a man and the father of the woman. The couple were pledged to each other. They were man and wife by this means of a marriage contract called a betrothal. The marriage itself was not complete until at least twelve months. The proof of this is seen when we read about Mary and Joseph.

The twelve month period was a time of fidelity. Even this time before the marriage could not be annulled without judicial approval. Unless there was infidelity mostly on the part of the woman. Christ Jesus was speaking of this when He mentioned fornication. Even this has to be dissolved by divorce.

This is why the disciples said it may be best not to marry. It seems that the disciples saw no possibility of obtaining a divorce, with divine approval after the marriage.

Jesus Christ gave these solutions:

1.) Some who were born eunuch.

Could feel it was unnecessary to marry.

2.) Some who for medical reasons were made eunuch.

These could feel it was unnecessary to marry.

3.) Some who were eunuch for the kingdom of heaven's sake.

These also could feel it was unnecessary to marry.

Most men could not accept this and the thought of this verse is then, "they should choose their partner wisely".

Christ Jesus did not respond to the question of divorce.

We must remember that these Pharisees supposedly lived by the letter of the law of Moses and their traditions. To commit adultery was punishable by death. A divorce then would not be neccessary.

*****Our Text:

Mat 19:14 But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 19:15 And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.

There is little doubt that the ones that brought these little children were the parents or maybe even the grandparents so He may touch them. To place your child into the arms of another required trust and acceptance.

Anger is a God-given part of our emotions and a response to injured love. Jesus Christ loved the little children and He responded to the faith these parents had in Him. Jesus was seeking this kind of faith from this nation and He demanded that the children be brought to Him.

Mar 10:15 Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall not enter therein.

*****Our Text:

Mat 19:16 And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life?

Mat 19:17 And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments.

Mat 19:18 He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,

Mat 19:19 Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Mat 19:20 The young man saith unto him, All these things have I kept from my youth up: what lack I yet?

Mat 19:21 Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

Mat 19:22 But when the young man heard that saying, he went away sorrowful: for he had great possessions.

Mat 19:23 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, Verily I say unto you, That a rich man shall hardly enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 19:24 And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

Mat 19:25 When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?

Mat 19:26 But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible.

We can observe the fact that we will never be able to follow the Lord Jesus Christ unless we are willing to pay the price. Jesus died for us! We have no right to dodge persecution!

What we see here is that a young man came to Jesus on his own accord. He at least was seeking answers to live by. It can be seen by this young man's questions that he had been trained in the Law of Moses and his faith was based upon works.

It seems he was seeking for something more as a works based faith will always leave you with a feeling of incompleteness. You can never do enough work to feel righteous. You will always seem to be lacking.

Salvation is by the "Grace" of God. There is no other way!

Only God is good!

If Jesus is just another religious leader and teacher then His words are no better than the others "But" if He is good, then He is God.

We need to listen to the words of this "GOOD" man.

Christ Jesus did not mention the law to show this young man how to be saved BUT to show him that he needed to be saved.

Rom 3:20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

Gal 3:24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

Gal 3:25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.

The law is a mirror that reveals what we are!

Jas 1:22 But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

Jas 1:23 For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass:

Jas 1:24 For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.

We must not forget the teaching of God's Word:

Jas 2:10 For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

Jas 2:11 For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.

This young man may have been sincere about his obedience to the law of Moses but Jesus pointed out a flaw in this young man's thinking.

Exo 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

This man coveted all his possessions and was not willing to part with any for any reason.

He was just as guilty as the adulterer, the murderer, the thief, and the liar. He could not see his sin and therefore repent.

Salvation is as simple as the A B C's:

1.) We must Admit we are sinners:

Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

2.) We must Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ:

Act 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

3.) We must Call on Jesus to save us:

Rom 10:13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

Jesus loved this young man and tried to help him see the light:

Mar 10:21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

WHO THEN CAN BE SAVED?

To the disciples it must have seemed that no one would ever make it to Heaven. What Jesus said was that it was impossible for anyone to get into Heaven by trusting in their riches. We know that many today believe that their money can do miracles for them and take them anywhere even eternal life.

There are other interpretations of this needle but the Greek word used was "rhaphis". This word indicates the surgeons' suturing needle. We should take these words as literal as we should all the Bible.

Jesus was not teaching that it was "difficult" for some one who trusted in his riches but he was teaching that it was "impossible" for some one who trusted in their own riches to get into the Kingdom of Heaven.

The disciples were still not clear on this teaching so Christ added these words:

"With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible"

*****Our Text:

Mat 19:27 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?

Mat 19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

Mat 19:29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

Mat 19:30 But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

The Rewards Of The King

THE THEME OF OUR LESSON

Peter was immediate to note that he and the other disciples had indeed given up all to follow the Lord. [The Lord then teaches the principle of rewards in glory].

What ever a disciple or a follower of the Lord Jesus has done or suffered for His sake will not be forgotten!

This does not mean we can earn a place in glory because it is by the "grace" of God and "grace" alone which will get us there.

Service and self denial of the believer are a results of "Grace".

The rewards then are by the mercies of God!

We can know that God even remembers that cup of water given in His name.

Mar 9:41 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.

Perhaps more important than the rewards Jesus says there is a time of "regeneration" coming. He speaks of the fact that He will rise from the dead, His Resurrection" and a day when all things will be made over.

A day when His creation is delivered and the reign of Satan ends.

This regeneration cannot come until King Jesus sits on the throne of His Kingdom.

Every thing will be done in the order of God!

1Co 14:40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

The judging of Israel in the Kingdom will be done by the disciples who will sit on twelve thrones. This is not the Church.

The Church will judge the World.

Rev 2:26 And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations:

Rev 2:27 And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.

Then comes the warning:

Mat 19:30 But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first.

Many who have expected to be admitted will be rejected and many who have felt unworthy will be accepted.

*****Our Text:

Mat 20:1 For the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is an householder, which went out early in the morning to hire labourers into his vineyard.

Mat 20:2 And when he had agreed with the labourers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.

Mat 20:3 And he went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,

Mat 20:4 And said unto them; Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you. And they went their way.

Mat 20:5 Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did likewise.

Mat 20:6 And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and saith unto them, Why stand ye here all the day idle?

Mat 20:7 They say unto him, Because no man hath hired us. He saith unto them, Go ye also into the vineyard; and whatsoever is right, that shall ye receive.

Though there be many interpretations of this scripture we must keep in mind, this scripture is not about "salvation"!

If it were true that the penny, which all did receive alike means salvation, then salvation would have to be worked for and earned by man as a laborer.

This eliminates the need for "Grace" and the God's Work, that He did on the Cross.

With out "grace" there would be no salvation!

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

Eph 2:9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

To believe that all rewards will be the same is also wrong! This parable is also not about rewards! This is in opposition to the scriptures.

A parable is fable, a story representing of something real in life or nature from which we can draw a moral conclusion.

The penny has no spiritual meaning in this story as it simply stands for something that is received.

We must also pass over the details of the hiring times.

This parable is connected to chapter 19.

The rich young man was rich in himself and did not know his true condition. He was rich in earthly possessions which he coveted and had to walk away from the Lord.

The Lord had stated that salvation was impossible with men but all things are possible with the Lord God.

Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Rom 3:24 [Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus]:

Then we had the Apostle Peter speak as though he was self righteous because he had given up all things for Christ.

The Lord had answered this saying, He surely would not forget the service, the self denial and the sacrifice of those that love Him.

Though there will be rewards as stated by our Lord, it is dangerous if we do not separate this from the the meaning of "Grace". As a believer we can forget we are in debt to the "Grace" of God and "Grace" only.

We must not become so preoccupied with our service that we forget it is by the "Grace" of God we have all things!

God does not want us to get our hearts away from His riches in "Grace" by Jesus Christ.

We need only to read the letters to the seven Churches in the Book of revelation to see this truth.

Rev 2:4 Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

God will give rewards in His own sovereignty, as it seems best to Him and never out of harmony with His justice!

Gen 18:25 That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: [Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?]

God will do as he pleases without the influence of man!

*****Our text:

Mat 20:8 So when even was come, the lord of the vineyard saith unto his steward, Call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last unto the first.

Mat 20:9 And when they came that were hired about the eleventh hour, they received every man a penny.

Mat 20:10 But when the first came, they supposed that they should have received more; and they likewise received every man a penny.

Mat 20:11 And when they had received it, they murmured against the goodman of the house,

Mat 20:12 Saying, These last have wrought but one hour, and thou hast made them equal unto us, which have borne the burden and heat of the day.

Mat 20:13 But he answered one of them, and said, Friend, I do thee no wrong: didst not thou agree with me for a penny?

Mat 20:14 Take that thine is, and go thy way: I will give unto this last, even as unto thee.

Mat 20:15 Is it not lawful for me to do what I will with mine own? Is thine eye evil, because I am good?

Mat 20:16 So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen.

While we labor for the Lord we miss the point if we do so for the rewards that are promised. If we accept that we are slaves, bought and paid for by the blood of Jesus.

Act 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, [which he hath purchased with his own blood].

Then we can see the rewards come as he has adopted us into His Family.

Eph 3:13 Wherefore I desire that ye faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.

Eph 3:14 For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

Eph 3:15 Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,

Eph 3:16 That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

Eph 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

Eph 3:18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;

Eph 3:19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

There is no greater riches than to know Christ Jesus and Him dwell within us!

Is it not lawful for God to do as he pleases?

Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

Joh 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God.

Joh 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Joh 1:4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

There is no life without Him, what greater reward is there than that of eternal life in His presence.

If we cannot trust that Our Lord will reward us according to His own riches, then how can we trust in Him for our "Salvation".

We can see in the end we will fail if we serve Him for the rewards that we may think we deserve!

"Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; what shall we have therefore?"

Jesus says many will be called but few will be chosen!

The Lord will lift up only those that have trusted in His "Grace"!

"Grace Grace God's Grace"

*****Our text:

Mat 20:17 And Jesus going up to Jerusalem took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them,

Mat 20:18 Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be betrayed unto the chief priests and unto the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death,

Mat 20:19 And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify him: and the third day he shall rise again.

Mat 20:20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.

Mat 20:21 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom.

Mat 20:22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.

Mat 20:23 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.

Mat 20:24 And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.

Mat 20:25 But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.

Mat 20:26 But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;

Mat 20:27 And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:

Mat 20:28 Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

As Jesus began His final journey to Jerusalem at that time before the cross, He again announces once more, His coming passion, His death, and His resurrection.

You know we talk a lot about the cross and the suffering of Christ Jesus but as He was in the flesh we can also think about the times Jesus had traveled to Jerusalem and had passed by the place where He would one day be raised on that cross. As he was in the flesh He had to have some dread of that day, yet at this time He went willingly to Jerusalem to suffer His fate.

This was the bitter cup that He was to drink.

Joh 18:11 Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: [the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?]

The Lord Jesus marched to that cross with no fear! He had come to do one thing:

1Pe 2:21 For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

1Pe 2:22 Who did no sin, neither was guile found in his mouth:

1Pe 2:23 Who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, he threatened not; but committed himself to him that judgeth righteously:

1Pe 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

1Pe 2:25 For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls.

As we read and study this scripture, we already know what happened to these disciples, The Apostles of the Lord, so the question we should ask ourselves is "are we going to follow in the example that Christ Jesus has shown us".

Christ knew everything that would happen to Him:

1Pe 1:10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently, who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you:

1Pe 1:11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.

This is the path of every believer who trust in Christ Jesus:

Luk 9:23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Luk 9:24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

Did this mother and these two sons realize what they ask?

Mar 10:32 And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,

The Bible says they were afraid!

They did not understand!

Luk 18:33 And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he shall rise again.

Luk 18:34 And they understood none of these things: and this saying was hid from them, neither knew they the things which were spoken.

Only Jesus knew the meaning of all that was about to happen to Him!

Jesus had come into this world to "Die".

Jesus Christ would not change His direction for He knew the cost of our sin!

Isa 50:5 The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.

Isa 50:6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

Isa 50:7 For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.

Christ Jesus was not ashamed to take my sin and hang it on that cross with Him. We should not listen to those that teach different!

When this Mother stepped forward with her question she truly had no idea what she was asking.

While these were seeking rewards, Jesus was fulfilling the "will of God".

To follow Christ Jesus is to indeed drink of His cup.

All the Apostles except John were martyred for preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Jesus was not harsh in His answer, but responded in tenderness and "grace".

The cup of agony was to be the cup of "salvation" to all that believe!

Until we know the Lord Jesus as our personal Savior we can know nothing of this "cup"!

The Apostle Paul tells us:

Col 1:22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

Col 1:23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Col 1:24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church:

And

Col 1:22 In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy and unblameable and unreproveable in his sight:

Col 1:23 If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

Col 1:24 Who now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up that which is behind of the afflictions of Christ in my flesh for his body's sake, which is the church:

And again:

Php 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

Php 3:11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead.

Php 3:12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus.

Php 3:13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before,

Php 3:14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.

Jesus Christ came to this earth to do the will of God, the "will" of Him who sent Him:

Joh 6:38 For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me.

Jesus declared to all that it was not for Him to give any places to His disciples but only to those that followed in the will of God just as He had.

Again we see the teaching patience of Christ Jesus.

The Kingdom, (The Millennial Kingdom) will not resemble the kingdom of the nations that existed at that time nor anytime for the return of Christ.

The greatest in God's Kingdom will be those who are servants. We have to do away with pride and accept God's wisdom for in it we have eternal life:

Pro 13:10 Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom.

Only a servant can be given "Grace":

Jas 4:5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

Jas 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.

Jas 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Jas 4:8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.

We can only imagine the thoughts of the mother of James and John as she stood at the cross and only saw two thieves on the left and right side of Jesus.

*****Our Text:

Mat 20:29 And as they departed from Jericho, a great multitude followed him.

Mat 20:30 And, behold, two blind men sitting by the way side, when they heard that Jesus passed by, cried out, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.

Mat 20:31 And the multitude rebuked them, because they should hold their peace: but they cried the more, saying, Have mercy on us, O Lord, thou Son of David.

Mat 20:32 And Jesus stood still, and called them, and said, What will ye that I shall do unto you?

Mat 20:33 They say unto him, Lord, that our eyes may be opened.

Mat 20:34 So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.

This closing event of this chapter shows us that even on the way to the cross, Jesus became a servant ot two blind beggars. He shows us all his compassion for His people right up to the end.

What have we learned?

1.) If we love the things of this world we cannot love God.

2.) If we do not yield to His will, we will not obey Him.

3.) If we seek glory in ourselves, we will not glorify Him.

4.) We cannot acknowledge Jesus as our Savior unless we love Him supremely, glorify Him completely, and obey Him without reservations.

5.) To do these things means we can share His life and Joy and one day reign with Him.

What "reward" is greater than this?

Let's pray!

The Instructions Of The King

The Instructions Of The King

Our Text: Matthew 18

It is fair to say the biggest hindrance to the Church has been the Church itself. When Christian people bicker and fight amongst themselves then the Church does not set much of an example to that lost soul looking in. When the Church sides with the immorality of the world it has not followed the truth of the Word of God and to that lost soul that is looking in he sees no difference from that of his own life.

The Church needs to be busy about the Masters work and leave off the ways of the world that have been seeping into God's House for a long time now. We need to be ashamed and humble our selves before God.

I am a Christian who attends a Baptist church, not because it is Baptist, but because I believe the doctrine is the closest thing to the New Testament church as taught by the Apostles.

Like Oliver Green said, when someone comes along with a doctrine that follows the doctrine of the New Testament church in the time of the Apostles in a better way then, I may go to a different church.

The main thing is to be in a Bible believing Church and that means the entire Word of God. I find the most accurate version to be the King James Bible.

The Apostle Paul wrote to Timothy these words:

1Ti 3:15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know [how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth].

In this chapter we will continue to see what Jesus taught His disciples about principles and relationships, especially involving the kingdom of Heaven. We must remember that this is not the church but these lessons are needed by today's believers as well.

What we will see is that after the transfiguration of chapter 17 is that these disciples showed more concern for their own status in that soon coming Millennial Kingdom than in the actual building of it.

*****Our Text:

Mat 18:1 At the same time came the disciples unto Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?

Mat 18:2 And Jesus called a little child unto him, and set him in the midst of them,

Mat 18:3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 18:4 Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as this little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Mat 18:5 And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.

Mat 18:6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.

Mat 18:7 Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!

Mat 18:8 Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.

Mat 18:9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

Mat 18:10 Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

This very first verse connects these events with the events of chapter seventeen:

Luk 9:37 And it came to pass, that on the next day, when they were come down from the hill, much people met him.

Luk 9:38 And, behold, a man of the company cried out, saying, Master, I beseech thee, look upon my son: for he is mine only child.

Luk 9:39 And, lo, a spirit taketh him, and he suddenly crieth out; and it teareth him that he foameth again, and bruising him hardly departeth from him.

Luk 9:40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out; and they could not.

Luk 9:41 And Jesus answering said, O faithless and perverse generation, how long shall I be with you, and suffer you? Bring thy son hither.

Luk 9:42 And as he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down, and tare him. And Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the child, and delivered him again to his father.

Luk 9:43 And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God. But while they wondered every one at all things which Jesus did, he said unto his disciples,

Luk 9:44 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men.

Luk 9:45 But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.

Luk 9:46 [Then there arose a reasoning among them, which of them should be greatest].

The questions of the kingdom stayed so much in the mind of the disciples that they were loosing track of their purpose.

As the church, we also have a place reserved in Heaven but if God did not have a purpose for us here while we yet live, then He would have taken us on to Heaven when he saved us.

There is not single child of God that has more influence with Him than another. We all have a job in the army of God and it is on that one thing that we will be judged at the Judgment Seat of Christ.

1Co 12:4 Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.

1Co 12:5 And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord.

1Co 12:6 And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all.

1Co 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal.

1Co 12:11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

1Co 12:12 For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ.

1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.

1Co 12:14 For the body is not one member, but many.

We receive the Holy Spirit upon being washed in the blood of Jesus. It is that very Spirit that will then give us a gift with a meaning and a purpose in the body of Christ.

Excluding Judas (the betrayer) and adding Matthias those 12 disciples will judge the nation of Israel during the Millennial Kingdom as it written, all on the same standing.

To emphasize, Jesus Christ sat a small child in the midst of them. With this child in plain site Jesus began to teach some valuable lessons.

1.) A child at that time was dependant totally upon it's father. A child knows nothing of itself but must be taught by it's father. A child must depend on it's father.

a.) In order to enter into the kingdom of heaven then that person must have a childlike dependence on the "One"(God) who offers up the kingdom.

2.) A child had no rights at home, all rights belonged to the parent. The child could not exert his will against his father but was subject to his father's will.

a.) The position in the kingdom of heaven depends on taking that position as a child.

3.) Only those that subject themselves to the will of the Father who is in Heaven can enter into that Heaven.

4.) To receive the Father one has to also receive His Children.

Mar 9:35 And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire [to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all].

Nothing like this had ever been taught in the history of the world.

This brings to the importance of these words:

Php 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:

We must humble our selves before God as a child. True humility means knowing yourself, accepting yourself, and being yourself, to the Glory of God.

There are two extremes we have to avoid:

1.) Thinking less of ourselves than we ought to:

As Moses:

Exo 3:11 And Moses said unto God, Who am I, that I should go unto Pharaoh, and that I should bring forth the children of Israel out of Egypt?

We know Moses as one of the great men of the Bible and probably one of the two witnesses in the Book of the Revelation of Christ.

2.) We can also think too much of ourselves:

Rom 12:3 For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.

Rom 12:4 For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office:

Rom 12:5 So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.

3.) The servant of God will not deny the gifts God has given to them but will use them to the Glory of God.

An unspoiled child of God will:

1.) Trust in Him for everything.

2.) Depend on Him for all things.

3.) Desire to make others happy through knowledge of Jesus Christ.

4.) There will not be a selfish desire to be greater than others.

5.) He will not boast of his accomplishments.

None of us want to be servants but God requires us to have the mind of a servant.

Jesus points out four attitudes about children:

1.) "become as little children"

2.) "humble himself as this little child"

3.) "receive one such little child"

4.) "despise not one of these little ones"

We must be careful that we do not become a stumblingblock to any child of God.

Like the good Shepherd, God seeks the lost and God saves them. As His servants WE MUST NOT CAUSE THEM TO PERISH.

We would be foolish to also think that these things did not apply to the way we raise our own children. I'm sure child neglect is a serious matter to Our Father in Heaven.

Humility is a much desired trait of the redeemed of the Lord:

1Pe 5:6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:

1Pe 5:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Jesus was not telling us to maim our own bodies but He was telling us instructing us to perform "spiritual surgery" on ourselves, removing anything that could cause us or others to stumble.

A truly humble person lives for Jesus first and others next. In fact a good rule of thumb still is the word JOY:

Jesus

Others

Yourself

*****Our text:

Mat 18:11 For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost.

Mat 18:12 How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray?

Mat 18:13 And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray.

Mat 18:14 Even so it is not the will of your Father which is in heaven, that one of these little ones should perish.

The goals of Jesus should be the goals of every Christian. We should want what God wants!

God wants every living breathing human being to be saved. It's up to God if that takes place. It is in the hands of God and not in our hands but we should have the attitude that all are in need of salvation and be open witnesses to all that will hear God's message. He does the calling and He does the saving.

OUR JOB IS TO BE THE WITNESS. Not only in theWord of God but in our daily lives. There are always those that are looking at those who claim to be Christian.

There is no greater words about the shepherd than that in John 10:

Joh 10:6 This parable spake Jesus unto them: but they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them.

Joh 10:7 Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.

Joh 10:8 All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.

Joh 10:9 I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

Joh 10:10 The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.

Joh 10:11 I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.

Joh 10:12 But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.

Joh 10:13 The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.

Joh 10:14 I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.

Joh 10:15 As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.

Joh 10:16 And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.

*****Our Text:

Mat 18:15 Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother.

Mat 18:16 But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.

Mat 18:17 And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.

Christ Jesus has already announced His intention to build His Church. We also know that the building of the Church is still future, after the cross. He has said that no Church exists at this time of His life on this Earth.

And so the words He spoke now to the disciples are in anticipation to the gathering out of the assembly of God. (The Church)

The "Church" is not the same thing as the "Synagogue"!

Jesus had already answered their question about who will be the greatest. He had said that true believers must be as little children and Born of God.

Jesus had spoke of His "mission" to save all that are lost.

Jesus spoke of His "grace" in seeking those that stray.

Now His teaching falls on those that have sinned. He speaks directly of the brother who has sinned!

Jesus will now address how a brother who is in sin is to be treated:

If a brother is in sin, whether it be intentional or unintentional another brother is to go to that brother and point out that sin to him.

The object is to restore and regain this brother. This should only be done after earnest prayer, in meekness and only after self judgment.

God gave these words to the Church:

Gal 6:1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

Gal 6:2 Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.

Gal 6:3 For if a man think himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceiveth himself.

Gal 6:4 But let every man prove his own work, and then shall he have rejoicing in himself alone, and not in another.

Gal 6:5 For every man shall bear his own burden.

Gal 6:6 Let him that is taught in the word communicate unto him that teacheth in all good things.

Gal 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.

Gal 6:8 For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting.

Gal 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.

Gal 6:10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.Gal 6:1 Brethren, if a man be overtaken in a fault, ye which are spiritual, restore such an one in the spirit of meekness; considering thyself, lest thou also be tempted.

Gal 6:10 As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

1.) We can see that the first step is to treat our brother in a personal manner and not over expose the committed sin to others.

2.) If he will not listen as it would be your understanding against his own understanding then another witness or two should be taken both having the same manner of preparation. (Prayer, in meekness, and self judgment)

3.) After this fails then it should be presented to the entire Body of Christ all in the same manner, in prayer, in meekness, and self examination. And if everyone in one accord and there is no repentance then step four will be taken.

4.) Let him be as a heathen and a publican:

Heathen means today:

In modern usage the word denotes all nations that are strangers to the revealed Word Of God.

Publican means:

The class designated by this word, in the New Testament, were employed as collectors of the Roman revenue. A collector of toll or tribute. Among the Romans, a publican was a farmer of the taxes and public revenues, and the inferior officers of this class were deemed oppressive.

Both were hated by the Jews!

We must also understand that this is the function of the Church to the brothers in Christ. These same rules are not to be used on the "lost". We may judge our brother to a degree but we are witnesses only to the lost of this world. It is God and His Word that will judge the "Lost"!

*****Our text:

Mat 18:18 Verily I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever ye shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.

Mat 18:19 Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven.

Mat 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.

*****VERILY: means In truth, in fact, certainly.

What we see is that the Lord has given authority not to the Apostles but to the assembly, The Church to act on Earth for Himself. The authority of the Church is absolute. The Apostles are to teach but this cannot take place till after the death, burial, resurrection and ascension of Christ. It will begin at Pentecost. The proof being in the first sermon of the Apostle Peter.

It is the Church that has executive power! The Church is to act according to the rules laid down by Jesus in harmony with His Word.

It is necessary to maintain unity among believers because this has been required by the Lord for answered prayer. Corporate prayer is simply not effective unless it is done in unity and in agreement.

God said that where two or three that gather together in agreement with Him that He also would be there with them to pray.

We must stay focused on the goal, which is to save this brother.

Church discipline is not the Church acting as policemen but exercising the authority of God through a local Body of Christ to restore and erring child of God.

*****Our Text:

Mat 18:21 Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?

Mat 18:22 Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

Unless the lessons of the Word of God result in forgiveness, relationships cannot be mended and strengthened. Peter recognized this but, we cannot just assume that it is our brother that will sin against us. We then have exalted ourselves above our brother and lack humility. We all make mistakes!

When Christ died on that cross he unleashed limitless forgiveness. Where there is "agape" love, there can be no limits in forgiveness.

Eph 3:17 That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love,

Eph 3:18 May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height;

Eph 3:19 And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.

Eph 3:20 Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us,

Eph 3:21 Unto him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus throughout all ages, world without end. Amen.

Again Christ teach teaches the Church:

Col 3:12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering;

Col 3:13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

Col 3:14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.

Col 3:15 And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.

Mat 18:23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.

Mat 18:24 And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him, which owed him ten thousand talents.

Mat 18:25 But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.

Mat 18:26 The servant therefore fell down, and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.

Mat 18:27 Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.

Mat 18:28 But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellowservants, which owed him an hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.

Mat 18:29 And his fellowservant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.

Mat 18:30 And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.

Mat 18:31 So when his fellowservants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.

Mat 18:32 Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:

Mat 18:33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?

Mat 18:34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.

Mat 18:35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.Mat 18:23 Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.

Mat 18:35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

In order to teach the principle of forgiveness Jesus uses a parable.

Let's put this in perspective. At the time of Jesus the entire levy of taxes for all of Palestine was only about 800 talents a year. This man was stealing funds from the king and actually thought he could get out of debt.

800 talents in our day would be about 10 million dollars. This man owed 10 thousand talents. This man owed about 125 million dollars to this king. This man could never repay this debt.

That sounds a whole lot like my debt I owed when the Lord paid my debt. I had a debt I could not pay.

This man's belongings and all his family would never be enough to pay this debt. We can see the "typology" in these statements. You cannot accumulate enough in this world to get you into Heaven. Only with God's mercy and His Grace can we obtain eternal life!

This servant did just as we all have to do. We have to humble ourselves before a righteous God.

The Master was moved with this man's plea and forgave him.

Oh what a Savior!

Act 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.

Heb 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.

Heb 13:12 Wherefore Jesus also, that he might sanctify the people with his own blood, suffered without the gate.

Rev 1:5 And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood,

Why because I had a debt I could not pay. My blood would have meant my life.

What is propitiation?

The act of appeasing wrath and conciliating the favor of an offended person; the act of making propitious.

In theology, the atonement or atoning sacrifice offered to God to assuage his wrath and render him propitious to sinners. Christ is the propitiation for the sins of men.

He is all that is needed for propitiation in behalf of our sins, the propitiatory sacrifice provided by the Father's love removing the estrangement, appearing God's righteous wrath against the sinner. A father may be offended with a son, yet all the while love him.

Rom 3:25 Whom God hath set forth to be [a propitiation] through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

1Jn 2:2 And he is [the propitiation] for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

1Jn 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be [the propitiation] for our sins.

Now the true test of the forgiven ones:

This servant did not deserve this forgiveness but did it change him?

Let's not forget what a parable is all about:

A fable or allegorical relation or representation of something real in life or nature, from which a moral is drawn for instruction.

A parable is the placing side by side or comparing earthly truths, expressed, with heavenly truths to be understood.

This servant left the presence of this king. You if we are truly saved we will never want to leave from the presence of our King, Our Lord, Our God.

When he did he found a servant that had owed him some money. Now a pence at the time of Jesus was a day's wages. This man owed 100 pence which could have been paid with 100 days of labor.

This unjust servant, who had left the presence of the Lord, had no forgiveness in his heart.

Now we could see this in two different ways but we must be careful. We could say that in "typology" that this man was saved and then lost his salvation and we would be in great error.

What we really should realize is this parable relates to the kingdom heaven, which is not the Church though a great principle can be observed here.

The truth is that he had not ask for forgiveness with a open heart. He had not truly invited the Lord Jesus into his heart.

James says:

Jas 2:8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself, ye do well:

Jas 2:17 Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.

Jas 2:18 Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.

Jas 2:19 Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

This servant who had had the opportunity to avoid prison was now placed into prison. The king had these words:

Mat 18:33 Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?

Mat 18:34 And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him.

Mat 18:35 So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, if ye from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

In other words:

If you want to live by the justice of this world rather than the justice of God, then you can have it your way.

It was the actions of this servant that sent him to hell rather than the freedom offered by this king.

The world's worst prison is the prison of an unforgiving heart. When we refuse to forgive others we are imprisoning our selves in our own torment.

Let's Pray!
