The Perception Of God's Servant

The Perception Of God's Servant

"Answering His Enemies"

Book of Mark Chapter 12

As we have been seeing the actions of Jesus cause quite a stir among the religious leaders of Jerusalem and Jesus still causes quite a stir not only to the religious world but also the the so-called non-believers or Atheist.

Jesus said:

Mat 10:34 Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

Sin is a fixed and an unyielding power on this earth but there is another overpowering force that can conquer sin, it is called Christianity.

It is obvious that there must then be a conflict, a war between these two, and that conflict can have only one ending. The most powerful will prevail!

It is the greatness of Jesus Christ that has set the world on fire!

In the time of Jesus, no one doubted the miracles that He had done. It is only since His death and His resurrection that people have disputed His miracles being real.

Shame on those, who will be judged by the same Word of God, that they themselves have rejected as the truth!

If those chief priests, scribes, and elders of Jerusalem wanted to know more about the "authority" of Jesus then they had to listen to His teaching!

Let's begin:

*****Mar 12:1 And he began to speak unto them by parables. A certain man planted a vineyard, and set an hedge about it, and digged a place for the winefat, and built a tower, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into a far country.
Mar 12:2 And at the season he sent to the husbandmen a servant, that he might receive from the husbandmen of the fruit of the vineyard.
Mar 12:3 And they caught him, and beat him, and sent him away empty.
Mar 12:4 And again he sent unto them another servant; and at him they cast stones, and wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully handled.
Mar 12:5 And again he sent another; and him they killed, and many others; beating some, and killing some.
Mar 12:6 Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son.
Mar 12:7 But those husbandmen said among themselves, This is the heir; come, let us kill him, and the inheritance shall be ours.
Mar 12:8 And they took him, and killed him, and cast him out of the vineyard.
Mar 12:9 What shall therefore the lord of the vineyard do? he will come and destroy the husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others.
Mar 12:10 And have ye not read this scripture; The stone which the builders rejected is become the head of the corner:
Mar 12:11 This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?

We must not forget that a parable is a comparison of earthly things with heavenly things, or an earthly story that has a heavenly meaning.

In this parable, that certain householder would be Our Creator, The Living God, Our Father who is in Heaven.

Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth

That house would be His entire creation, but especially the Earth.

Pro 16:4 The LORD hath made all things for himself: yea, even the wicked for the day of evil.

That vineyard would be the land given to Israel or Canaan Land.

Psa 80:8 Thou hast brought a vine out of Egypt: thou hast cast out the heathen, and planted it.

That hedge was the protecting hand of God.

Deu 32:39 See now that I, even I, am he, and there is no god with me: I kill, and I make alive; I wound, and I heal: neither is there any that can deliver out of my hand.

That wine-press was the children of Israel.

Isa 5:2 And he fenced it, and gathered out the stones thereof, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also made a winepress therein: and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.

That tower was the Word of God.

Deu 31:26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the LORD your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee.

Those husbandmen would be the Jew, the religious leaders along with the elders of all of Israel.

Isa 5:7 For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah his pleasant plant: and he looked for judgment, but behold oppression; for righteousness, but behold a cry.

That far country is Heaven.

Eze 11:23 And the glory of the LORD went up from the midst of the city, and stood upon the mountain which is on the east side of the city.

Hos 4:1 Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.

Hos 4:6 My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: because thou hast rejected knowledge, I will also reject thee, that thou shalt be no priest to me: seeing thou hast forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.

That vineyard was to be cared for and cultivated for God's use, not for the world but to teach the world about Jehovah God!

There are 3 plants in the Bible that symbolize Israel.

1) It is the "vine" that represents Israel in the Old Testament times through to the time they rejected Jesus Christ.

2) It is the "olive tree" that represents Israel in the future, after the Great Tribulation period, when the veil has been removed and they accept Jesus Christ as their Savior.

3) And as we have just seen that it is the "fig tree" that represents Israel in between these two times.

The fig tree is then associated with sin and failure!

God had grown His vine into a nation, while it was in Egypt.

God had carried His vine into the "promised" land of Canaan.

God had protected Israel from her enemies as long as they were obedient to Him.

We should not be fooled here, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, were looking for a place far greater than the promised land of Canaan:

Heb 11:9 By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:
Heb 11:10 For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

But God had provided everything in the promised land, so that Israel could prosper and become a mighty nation and they did reach a partial peak in the time of David and Solomon.

Israel had been a stubborn nation from the beginning and had rejected God's ownership.

Israel had rejected all the prophets that God had sent, even Moses, who they had claimed to adore and to follow.

They had also rejected the truth of Abraham!

Israel had sunk into apostasy!

So, God sent His Own Son.

The Son already knew the outcome but God had sent Him because of His Mercy and His Grace.

Joh 5:18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.

The Jews had already made their intentions perfectly clear.

Mar 11:18 And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: "for they feared him", because all the people was astonished at his doctrine.

Israel had not realized that it was the "new land" promised to them, that city of God, that Abraham was seeking from God that was so valuable.

And only the believer can know that it is the New Heaven and the New Earth that has real value, not this world we live on now!

It was God's Son, Jesus Christ, who was actually the True Vine!

It is God Himself who is True Husbandman!

Joh 15:1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.

By destroying the Son, these Jewish leaders had sealed their doom!

*****We miss the point of this parable if we cannot see that this was Israel's final warning before The Lord would begin what we now call the Church Age!

But, at this time, there was still time for Israel to repent!

God will always offer a time to repent!

In fact we are in that time right now, the Church Age of God's "Mercy" and "Grace"!

Israel had been the apple of God's eye:

Zec 2:8 For thus saith the LORD of hosts; After the glory hath he sent me unto the nations which spoiled you: for he that toucheth you toucheth the apple of his eye.

And they still are His elect nation!

But, the, "whosoever will come", Church is now God's peculiar treasure!

1Pe 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
1Pe 2:10 Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

The Jewish nation had been appointed to spread the Word of God but the Jewish nation was unfaithful to that appointment.

The Jewish nation had rejected the moral government of Jehovah God. Most all nations are still rejecting the moral government of Jehovah God and His Son Jesus!

They rejected Theocracy in favor of a Monarchy and they had already had many kings.

We have seen with our own eyes, and history has proved, that God has punished this nation of Israel severely.

Why?

Mat 27:24 When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.
Mat 27:25 Then answered all the people, and said, "His blood be on us, and on our children".

Israel had cursed their on selves!

The Word of God is now in the hands of the Church!

Jesus then sings to these rulers of Israel, this part of a song they should have memorized and known:

Psa 118:22 The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.
Psa 118:23 This is the LORD'S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.

These Jews clearly understood what Jesus had said but it had only made them an even a greater enemy!

Most people refuse to look on their own selves and can only see sin in others than themselves!

*****Mar 12:12 And they sought to lay hold on him, but feared the people: for they knew that he had spoken the parable against them: and they left him, and went their way.

These chief priests, and Scribes and elders of Israel only knew they had to silence the Lord Jesus Christ and only their fear of the people stopped from trying to do it this day.

Because at this point the people stood with Jesus but those same people would soon have change of heart.

Even good people can be incited to riot!

They had clearly understood that this parable was about them.

They knew that all these things had really happened and they were not shamed, but incited to do evil.

They again began to formulate their plan to kill, God's Son, The Lord Jesus Christ.

Even enemies became friends in order to unite all people against the Lord Jesus Christ!

They first sent certain Pharisees and Herodians who they knew also wanted to kill Jesus.

*****Mar 12:14 And when they were come, they say unto him, Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: for thou regardest not the person of men, but teachest the way of God in truth: Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar, or not?
Mar 12:15 Shall we give, or shall we not give? But he, knowing their hypocrisy, said unto them, Why tempt ye me? bring me a penny, that I may see it.
Mar 12:16 And they brought it. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? And they said unto him, Caesar's.
Mar 12:17 And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's. And they marvelled at him.

These Pharisees were zealots of the Laws of Moses, but even more so to their own verbal interpretation and additions of those laws.

These Herodians showed themselves to be righteous men but were only spies for the government.

I believe we still have many Herodians that have been elected to office in our own nation.

That word "catch" gives us a picture of a hunting party, who came to set traps for some animal!

Jesus is truly the Master but these enemies had not come to be taught!

We all know, that you cannot teach a "know it all" anything new!

Instead of challenging the Lord, they pretended to consult with the Lord Jesus and they began by trying to flatter Him!

Where have we heard this before?

Dan 11:21 And in his estate shall stand up a vile person, to whom they shall not give the honour of the kingdom: but he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.

These are the same tactics that Satan employs but the Lord Jesus could not be fooled by such trickery!

**If Jesus yields to the foreign government of Rome the Pharisees will incite the Jews against Him.

**If Jesus teaches the refusal to pay taxes, the Herodians will incite the ruling Roman government against Him.

This was a trap that surely would work in favor of these false men and against the Lord Jesus, but they would be wrong again.

This question of paying taxes required a direct answer or at least so they thought.

At this time, Israel was not allowed to have a national coinage.

They were only allowed to produce a half-shekel and this was only allowed so the Temple tax could be paid to Rome.

Jesus did not ask for the half-shekel but asked only for a penny, knowing that it would be a Roman currency.

These leaders of Israel had already submitted to the rule of Rome.

So Jesus asked them a simple question?

One side of this coin had the image of Caesar and the other side had an inscription of the Roman government.

So, Jesus replied:

"Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's"

When we accept the protection of our earthly governments then we are also to help maintain that government and this is a commandment!

1Pe 2:13 Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord's sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;
1Pe 2:14 Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.
1Pe 2:15 "For so is the will of God, that with well doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men":
1Pe 2:16 As free, and not using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness, but as the servants of God.

But we should also clearly understand, that the things of God are Spiritual, and we cannot neglect these things!

Rom 12:1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Clearly these men, that had come to trap the Lord Jesus, did not understand the truth of the Word of God and they again marvelled at Our Lord!

Another song out of their song book had these words:

Psa 33:10 The LORD bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the devices of the people of none effect.
Psa 33:11 The counsel of the LORD standeth for ever, the thoughts of his heart to all generations.
Psa 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

It is every nation that understands all these things that will be a prosperous nation!

These men knew they had failed and withdrew but there are always some others that think they can out do God!

*****Mar 12:18 Then come unto him the Sadducees, which say there is no resurrection; and they asked him, saying,
Mar 12:19 Master, Moses wrote unto us, If a man's brother die, and leave his wife behind him, and leave no children, that his brother should take his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.
Mar 12:20 Now there were seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and dying left no seed.
Mar 12:21 And the second took her, and died, neither left he any seed: and the third likewise.
Mar 12:22 And the seven had her, and left no seed: last of all the woman died also.
Mar 12:23 In the resurrection therefore, when they shall rise, whose wife shall she be of them? for the seven had her to wife.

The Sadducees were another sect of Jewish religion who thought they were the aristocrats of Jewish society.

They looked down on everybody!

They rejected the principles of Abraham but were rigid in things of the Law of Moses.

But, they denied any future state of of punishment or reward was biblical. They denied Heaven and Hell existed.

They rejected the existence of angels and spirits.

They taught that to please God, He asked no more than to be good in this life. We know that we cannot work our way into Heaven!

They totally rejected any teaching of a future resurrection.

Jesus knew all these things!

So what had Moses written?

Deu 25:5 If brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of the dead shall not marry without unto a stranger: her husband's brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty of an husband's brother unto her.
Deu 25:6 And it shall be, that the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, "that his name be not put out of Israel".

We can see that the intent of this law was to preserve the ownership of the land that was divided to each family by Joshua.

These things had already been written before the Jews had entered Egypt so Moses intended this law to be an obligation when Israel entered in Canaan Land.

This is also where the law of the "kinsman redeemer" came from.

We must remember the promise given to Abraham which was ignored by the Sadducees:

Gen 22:16 And said, By myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, for because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son:
Gen 22:17 That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
Gen 22:18 "And in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed"; because thou hast obeyed my voice.

The thought behind these things is that Israel could not become a great nation if the families produced no children and they would loose their land to a stranger.

This same thought drives Israel even today as they try to hold on to the land given to them by God and we should stand with them!

The Sadducees only recognized the first five books or what is known as the Pentateuch.

The word Pentateuch is not found in scripture but when we see the phrase "Book of Moses", or "The Law", or "Torah", this is what is intended.

When Jesus said "Do ye not therefore err", What Jesus was saying was that "you only accept the first 5 books of the Bible, but you cannot even get those right"!

And as we have just studied, "marriage was ordained" of God to perpetuate the "human" family!

In the future state of man after death, "there is no such ordinance as human life will end", but spiritual life can never end!

In this fashion, the glorified body of redeemed men are like the angels because the angels cannot die a physical death like the human!

Jesus adds, even in those same 5 books you should have read that "I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob".

And Jesus adds:

"He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living"

Since God quickens each of the dead, the dead then have no God! Neither the soul of the saved nor the soul of the unsaved can die!

Rom 4:17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.

God is the Creator, He gave life when there was no life!

God can then assure the existence of of those that trust Him, "which are not yet glorified", as if they already are eternal, and God can never fail to accomplish the things He has promised!

And again Jesus added, all these things are in the first 5 books of the Bible, "therefore you do greatly err".

These Sadducees were put in their place but there was another group that was looking on to see if they failed.

*****Mar 12:28 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?

It was the scribes that held the important offices of public affairs and were somewhat like Secretaries of State of many nations in our times.

It was the scribes, in the times of Jesus, who also made the copies of the Bible because there was no means of printing at this time.

A scribe and a lawyer was the same person in most cases, at the time of Jesus.

It was the scribes who were considered the authority of what the Bible actually contained.

They may have made many copies but they had never taken the time to study the Word of God.

Memorizing the scripture is great and should be encouraged but if we cannot relate those scriptures to our lives we have missed the "Gospel" of Jesus Christ!

We must study the Word of God as He commands!

We must then rightly divide the Word of God! God wrote certain things to certain people and at certain times!

2Ti 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.

But these scribes had asked a great question and Jesus did not hesitate to respond:

*****Mar 12:29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:
Mar 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
Mar 12:31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

This phrase "Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord" was recited twice a day by every professing Jew at this time and it is still done today!

Deu 6:4 Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
Deu 6:5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.
Deu 6:6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

This scripture was intended as a national protest against all false religions that had come into Israel and Jerusalem by all the invading armies and cultures, especially in the 400 years of what we call the silent period between the Old and the New Testament.

This was the voice of Israel against the polytheisms, the pantheisms and the atheisms of the heathen world.

There truly exist only One "Living" God and One "Personal" God, and His name is Jehovah!

Who is Jehovah?

Mat 28:19 Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of [the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost]:

Jehovah is then the Tri-Une God!

God is three in respect to "Persons" but in Essence, these three are One!

1) The Father is God:

1Co 8:6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.

2) The Son is God:

Heb 1:8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
Heb 1:9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

3) The Holy Spirit is God:

Act 5:3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?
Act 5:4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

Jesus said, this is the God we must love and this is a command, and not a request!

It is "love" that fulfills all commandments and it is the "Love for this God" where redemption begins!

Christianity must take it's stand on the fact that we must love our Tri-Une God and then our fellow man and in that order!

How much are we to love Him?

A) With "all" our heart.

According to the Bible, the heart is the center of spiritual activity but also for all the operations of human life. The heart is also the seat of our conscience!

Pro 4:23 Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

B) With "all" our soul.

According to the Bible, the soul is our living being. The soul contains our person, our desires, our appetite for life, our emotions and our passion for life!

It is the soul that separates the human from the animal world!

Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and "breathed into his nostrils the breath of life"; and man became a living soul.

C) With "all" our mind.

The mind is the organ of spiritual perception. It is in the mind where we store our understanding of the things of God!

Rom 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed "by the renewing of your mind", that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

D) With "all" our strength.

Our strength is our ability to control our body of flesh. Our strength is our means of movement toward God. Our strength is made stronger by "Faith"!

Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and [with the mouth] confession is made unto salvation.

It is our Christian strength that is our force against the evil in this world!

Jas 2:20 But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?

It is only our love for God that should come before our love for our fellow man!

And Jesus said "There is none other commandment greater than these"!

And that scribe responded:

*****Mar 12:32 And the scribe said unto him, Well, Master, thou hast said the truth: for there is one God; and there is none other but he:
Mar 12:33 And to love him with all the heart, and with all the understanding, and with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love his neighbour as himself, is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.

That scribe only repeated what the Lord had said in agreement with Him, but he added a little something.

"is more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices"

Samuel had confronted King Saul on his return from war with Amelek with these words:

1Sa 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

In other words, there is nothing in this world greater in this life that we can do for the Lord beyond obeying His every Word!

These words got the attention of the Lord Jesus Christ.

*****Mar 12:34 And when Jesus saw that he answered discreetly, he said unto him, Thou art not far from the kingdom of God. And no man after that durst ask him any question.

No doubt this scribe had witnessed every response of Jesus as He had answered all His enemies.

This scribe was no longer critical of Jesus but was under conviction because Jesus had answered every question according to the Word of God!

This man was realizing that the true "Gospel" was actually standing before him.

What is the kingdom?

The Kingdom, is the rule of God in the human heart.

It exists now but we will not fully realize the Kingdom until we get to Heaven!

We have to seek the Kingdom of God it to gain it!
We have to do the work the Lord has given us to do to retain the Kingdom of God!

Retaining the Kingdom of God is then winning it!

The Kingdom of God is then the "Truth of God"!

The Kingdom of God is not visible, so the Kingdom of God is not the Church even though the Church could be called the Kingdom of Christ!

This scribe understood the "Gospel" at this time even better than the disciples of Christ except for one thing.

He would not openly confess Christ Jesus!

Joh 12:42 Nevertheless among the chief rulers also many believed on him; but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue:
Joh 12:43 For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.

No one else had questions for Jesus, so Jesus then asked a question.

*****Mar 12:35 And Jesus answered and said, while he taught in the temple, How say the scribes that Christ is the Son of David?
Mar 12:36 For David himself said by the Holy Ghost, The LORD said to my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, till I make thine enemies thy footstool.
Mar 12:37 David therefore himself calleth him Lord; and whence is he then his son? And the common people heard him gladly.

Jesus asked the multitude, "How do these that confess they know the Word of God so well, say as truth, that the Messiah is to be the son of David?"

Jesus answers that question this way. "David said by the Holy Ghost"

1) Jesus said, that what David had said was given to him by the Holy Ghost!

2Ti 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2Ti 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

2) Jesus said, David wrote, under the influence of the Holy Ghost[Holy Spirit] that the Messiah was his LORD.

Psa 110:1 A Psalm of David. The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool.
Psa 110:2 The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies.

These Jews clearly understood that David was writing of the coming Messiah!

It should be obvious to us, that the way the scribes taught this scripture gave the intent that the Messiah was inferior to King David, which is apostasy and false.

Jesus in the flesh may have been inferior to King David in his flesh and King of Israel, but David had written that the Messiah was his LORD!

That title "LORD" always means Jehovah, the "I AM" of all scripture, the Tri-Une God!

To sit at "the right hand" denotes that the Messiah would have all the power and majesty of God!

But it also means that a part of the work of the Messiah was done to the satisfaction of the Father in Heaven.

The Messiah would sit at the right hand as the great High Priest forever but also a King.

The Messiah is then to be King and Priest!

But the Messiah would only sit at the right hand of the Father for "a period of time" designated as "until I make thy foes thy footstool"

Peter explained it this way:

Act 2:34 For David is not ascended into the heavens: but he saith himself, The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,
Act 2:35 Until I make thy foes thy footstool.
Act 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ.

Lord means, "having all authority"!

Christ means "the Messiah"!

There is only One and that is Our God!

It was not David that was ascended into Heaven, for his body was still in his grave!

In fact until the Cross, David's soul may not have even ascended to Heaven under the Old Testament, but actually to place called Paradise:

Luk 23:43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

This is the place that Jesus promised to meet that thief on the cross beside Jesus.

This is probably same place as Abraham's Bosom, where the soul of David would have been along with Lazarus:

Luk 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

It is only after the death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus where the believer can join the Lord Jesus in Heaven.

2Co 5:6 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
2Co 5:7 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
2Co 5:8 We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.

The Messiah would ascend to the right hand of God:

a) This would end the earthly ministry of the Messiah, as Savior.

b) This would end the place of humiliation of the God-man on Earth as He returned to the "Glory World".

Joh 17:5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.

c) This would mark the beginning of a new work in Heaven, the Great High Priest.

Heb 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
Heb 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

d) This would make the descent of the Holy Spirit possible!

Joh 16:7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

And this would bring Holy Ghost Power to this earth:

Joh 16:8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
Joh 16:9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
Joh 16:10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
Joh 16:11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

e) But this same Messiah will truly return as King!

Rev 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

Where this same Messiah will reign with His "rod of power", His "rod of iron".

Rev 19:15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
Rev 19:16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

The Lord has very little tolerance for those that claim to know the Word of God and do not teach the truth, when it is obvious the common people could understand what God has to say!

This why it is important to try to get a copy of the Bible into the hands of every individual on this Earth so they can read it themselves!

These common people gladly accepted the Word of God, so Jesus cautioned them.

*****Mar 12:38 And he said unto them in his doctrine, Beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the marketplaces,
Mar 12:39 And the chief seats in the synagogues, and the uppermost rooms at feasts:
Mar 12:40 Which devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater damnation.

Jesus said, "Be On Guard" when being taught by these men.

The scribes were mostly Pharisees and their principles and practices were very bad. Their teaching was to be avoided!

If we do not take the time to study the Word of God ourselves, we will never know if those that teach God's Word are teaching the truth!

It is the "doctrine of the Lord Jesus Christ" where we begin to know the truth!

1) To be a believer is to be in the army of God, and one of the hardest things for most of us to do is to take a back seat and yield to the preeminence of others but that is exactly where God wants each of us.

We need to serve as the "private" because we only have One Captain, King Jesus!

These scribes dressed as if they were the General of the army !

2) These scribes would appear in places where people were gathered but not for the right reasons!

Jesus said:

Mat 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

This is "NOT" what these scribes were doing!

They came seeking their own glory!

3) These scribes, as a class, had a wholly false sense of values.

Their pride caused them to seek out all seats of preeminence!

Pro 16:18 Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.
Pro 16:19 Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

4) One of the duties of the scribes was to prepare wills and other deeds.

Most of them were not content with the usual fee and they would particularly prey upon the fears and the lack of spiritual knowledge of those that were recently widowed.

In many cases they would persuade widows to deed over their entire property to the Temple, while these scribes would receive a great proportion of the proceeds for that transaction.

It is easy to see why the Lord despised all these religious leaders!

Pro 14:31 He that oppresseth the poor reproacheth his Maker: but he that honoureth him hath mercy on the poor.

5) God will reward those that diligently seek Him, but these scribes sought only their own recognition!

The word "pretence" meant this prayer was only an outward showing, "in these very public prayers".

A "Pretender" will make a show of things that are not real and will claim the fulfillment of anything that they are involved with.

Jesus Christ knew all these things.

Psa 78:36 Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues.
Psa 78:37 For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant.

And after these things Jesus entered the Temple for the last time.

*****Mar 12:41 And Jesus sat over against the treasury, and beheld how the people cast money into the treasury: and many that were rich cast in much.
Mar 12:42 And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.
Mar 12:43 And he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, That this poor widow hath cast more in, than all they which have cast into the treasury:
Mar 12:44 For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.

When Jesus sat to watch those who gave to the treasury of the Temple it was the last act of His ministry!

The Lord Jesus commended this record of this woman's two mites, which equaled a farthing.

A farthing is only 1/4 of a penny. This was a very small gift "in actual size" for the work of God!

But because she gave something that she truly needed herself, her rewards will be very great.

God does not measure gifts by the amount "but by its motive", and "by the amount left that is ungiven"!

This woman had nothing else to give but herself.

No matter what is taught about giving or even tithing, God really just has one rule!

Lev 5:7 And if he be not able to bring a lamb, then he shall bring for his trespass, which he hath committed, two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, unto the LORD; one for a sin offering, and the other for a burnt offering.

We must give what we can of the things we need for our selves to build rewards in Heaven, at least a tenth!

Our Great High Priest has already made atonement for all our sin!

SO, 100 percent of what we have belongs to the Lord!

That 10 percent represents that part of our need!

"All of our abundance", more than we need, must be available to God at His request!

This treasury in the Temple was open for all to see who was giving the most and none gave more than this poor widow. We know this because God was watching and He said so!

The Presentation Of Christ to Jerusalem

The Presentation Of God's Servant

"Messiah and King"

Book of Mark Chapter 11

Christ Jesus had just passed by the city of Jericho on His way to Jerusalem.

He had given sight to blind Bartimaeus, who is a picture of every lost sinner coming to the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation.

Jesus was drawing nearer to Jerusalem.

It is Jerusalem where He had come to die.

Why had God poured Himself into that babe that grew to become Jesus of Nazareth?

Joh 6:57 As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.
Joh 6:58 This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.

That manger where the baby Jesus was laid was in Bethlehem. Bethlehem means "house of bread".

God came to this earth as a babe to save babes. Jesus was laid in that manger because He is truly the "bread of life".

These words of Jesus are Spiritual!

Joh 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Jesus Christ is the Spiritual bread of life but that life is eternal and real!

Let's continue:

*****Mar 11:1 And when they came nigh to Jerusalem, unto Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount of Olives, he sendeth forth two of his disciples,

The Mount of Olives is a mountain ridge on the East side of Jerusalem and extends about 200 feet above the City of Jerusalem.

Jesus loved the Mount of Olives!

It is the Mount of Olives from where Jesus ascended and the exact place where Jesus will return!

Bethphage is the place where an unbroken colt was raised to be used by the Lord.

Bethphage was located a "Sabbath's day journey" from Jerusalem or about 3000 feet.

Bethany was 15 furlongs from Jerusalem or 15 times 606 feet which is about 1 and 4/5 miles.

It is Bethany where Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha lived.

It is this Mary that anointed Jesus with oil.

Jesus sent two of the disciples to perform a simple task.

*****Mar 11:2 And saith unto them, Go your way into the village over against you: and as soon as ye be entered into it, ye shall find a colt tied, whereon never man sat; loose him, and bring him.
Mar 11:3 And if any man say unto you, Why do ye this? say ye that the Lord hath need of him; and straightway he will send him hither.

We should not miss the fact that Jesus always knew what was going on everywhere in His created world at all times.

Jesus knew where this unbroken colt would be when He needed it.

This was an unbroken colt because no man had ever sit upon it.

According to Matthew this was the foal of a donkey:

Mat 21:2 Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me.

Why had Jesus chosen this animal?

Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass.

Jesus had to fulfill every prophesy that was written about Him or the Jews would not believe that He was the Messiah.

These things are written in the Word of God for all to know these truths!

*****Mar 11:4 And they went their way, and found the colt tied by the door without in a place where two ways met; and they loose him.
Mar 11:5 And certain of them that stood there said unto them, What do ye, loosing the colt?
Mar 11:6 And they said unto them even as Jesus had commanded: and they let them go.
Mar 11:7 And they brought the colt to Jesus, and cast their garments on him; and he sat upon him.

A place where two ways met and at the entrance of this village would have been a very public place. It would not have been easy for some one to take these animals without being seen.

Why would any king ride a donkey instead of a mighty warhorse?

In the ancient Middle Eastern world, leaders rode horses if they rode to war, but they rode on a donkey if they came in peace.

The mention of a donkey fits the description of a king who would be “righteous and having salvation, gentle.”

Jesus did not ride to conquer, and Jesus would ride not as king at this time.

He would enter in peace and He would come as Our Savior!

King Jesus will return on a white War Horse some time in the near future and it is at His Second Coming that He will fulfill another verse from Zachariah:

Rev 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.

Zec 9:10 And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.

It is then that King Jesus will cut off the chariot”: [this will bring an end to all the vehicles of war]

It is then that King Jesus will cut the war-horses”: [no need for war horses used in war because there would be no more war]

It is then that King Jesus will cut off the battle bow": [no need for bows or arrows for fighting, no need for weapons of war]

It is then that King Jesus will proclaim peace to the nations”: His message will be one of reconciliation and there will 1000 years of perfect peace]

It is then that King Jesus's rule shall be from sea to sea”: [King Jesus will control all His creation from His throne in Jerusalem, with no enemies of concern]

This is the prophesy of the Millennial Kingdom and this is why the Jews did could not understand their Messiah at this time.

Jesus sits on this unbroken colt showing that He came for a different reason and even the animals obey Him.

God writes all these things down so we can see them, as these they unfold.

*****Mar 11:8 And many spread their garments in the way: and others cut down branches off the trees, and strawed them in the way.
Mar 11:9 And they that went before, and they that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna; Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord:
Mar 11:10 Blessed be the kingdom of our father David, that cometh in the name of the Lord: Hosanna in the highest.

This is the only instant in the Word of God where we find the Lord Jesus riding upon any animal, at least while He was in the flesh.

Jesus came to bare all our burdens, not to be a burden to any part of His creation!

There were many times the Lord Jesus had urged His disciples to not allow His identity to be made known but this time, we see that on this day, that Jesus was openly proclaiming to be the Messiah.

Jesus had said that "even all the things in the Psalms" that were written must be fulfilled!

Remember the Book of Psalms was the Song Book of the Jews and these Psalms were to be sung when they gathered at the Temple and in the Synagogues, but these people were proudly singing them this day.

Psa 118:25 Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.
Psa 118:26 Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.

Jesus had come to be the Savior and He would do that!

That word "Hosanna" also meant "oh save"!

There are many who teach that the Lord Jesus Christ did not have a great influence on the people of His day.

They seem to reject this group of people that would have made Him King, if He had wanted to be king this day.

But most of the world still rejects the Lord Jesus Christ!

The rulers of Jerusalem were greatly concerned with Jesus because they could we the truth with their own eyes:

Joh 12:19 The Pharisees therefore said among themselves, Perceive ye how ye prevail nothing? "behold, the world is gone after him".

And Jesus had responded:

Joh 12:23 And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified.

But it was not time for the restored kingdom of David.

And to the Romans, a simple man "riding a baby donkey" posed no serious threat to them.

Luke also adds a few things that we should see:

Luk 19:39 And some of the Pharisees from among the multitude said unto him, Master, rebuke thy disciples.
Luk 19:40 And he answered and said unto them, I tell you that, if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out.

It is the Church that should pay close attention here!

We must praise Our Lord continuously and why would we not want to?

We have been saved from the pits of Hell!

We have a home being prepared for us in Heaven!

We should say how can we not praise Our Lord?

But, let it be known to all, the Lord will have His praise!

Psa 98:2 The LORD hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.
Psa 98:3 He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.
Psa 98:4 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.

We can be sure that all God's creation will one day praise Him!

Praise is not a ceremonial service.
Praise is not a duty.
Praise is not to be offered in sadness.
Praise is that saved soul crying out in delight!

But Jesus was also sad as he approached Jerusalem:

Luk 19:41 And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it,
Luk 19:42 Saying, If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes.
Luk 19:43 For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side,

It is the sin of this world that brought forth those tears from Our Savior!

God had chosen Israel to tell the world about Him and they would not.

True Christianity is walking with God, not just some occasional coming to Him!

We are to make it our business to know the will of God!

What is the will of God?

Gal 1:3 Grace be to you and peace from God the Father, and from our Lord Jesus Christ,
Gal 1:4 Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, [according to the will of God] and our Father:

It is the will of God that we all be delivered from this present evil world!

It is this evil world that brings death and spiritual death!

It is Jesus that brings life, and eternal life.

Heb 2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;
Heb 2:15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

Jesus wept because Israel had not brought forth this message!

Jesus wept because Jerusalem would soon be destroyed. [Titus destroyed Jerusalem in 70 AD]

But Jerusalem will also once again be surrounded by her enemies after the Church has been called home.

On this day Jesus Christ was revealed as king, BUT "not of this world"!

On this day of Jesus, while His people called Him to the throne, He went to the Cross!

But there was still a very few days before this would take place.

*****Mar 11:11 And Jesus entered into Jerusalem, and into the temple: and when he had looked round about upon all things, and now the eventide was come, he went out unto Bethany with the twelve.
Mar 11:12 And on the morrow, when they were come from Bethany, he was hungry:
Mar 11:13 And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves; for the time of figs was not yet.
Mar 11:14 And Jesus answered and said unto it, No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever. And his disciples heard it.

Israel is oftened symbolized in Scripture as a fig tree:

Hos 9:10 I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I saw your fathers as the firstripe in the fig tree at her first time: but they went to Baalpeor, and separated themselves unto that shame; and their abominations were according as they loved.

Jesus also gave us a parable of this time of Israel:

Luk 13:6 He spake also this parable; A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came and sought fruit thereon, and found none.
Luk 13:7 Then said he unto the dresser of his vineyard, Behold, these three years I come seeking fruit on this fig tree, and find none: cut it down; why cumbereth it the ground?
Luk 13:8 And he answering said unto him, Lord, let it alone this year also, till I shall dig about it, and dung it:
Luk 13:9 And if it bear fruit, well: and if not, then after that thou shalt cut it down.

Israel had been placed in the vineyard of God, and not on some neglected wasted ground!

God, Himself had planted this fig tree!

This fig tree was to take root and grow, and not only produce leaves but more important to produce fruit!

God had said any wild tree can take root and produce leaves, but God will never be satisfied until all His trees produces fruit.

God had come seeking fruit of Israel but there was none.

Israel had been blessed with the knowledge of the Living God!

So, God expects fruit according the privileges He has bestowed!

And, God does not ever forget about the trees He has planted!

God will always displeased with an unfruitful tree!

Jesus Christ had spent 3 years teaching, even using signs and wonders, and great miracles of creation and healing all disease, yet Israel would not produce fruit.

This fig tree then proves to us that prophesy was fulfilled because Israel had no figs!

Even today God still expects all His children to bare fruit!

Even every Christian is held accountable for his own fruit.

Being a Christian is not about putting on a show!

We cannot just grow to be some beautiful tree full of leaves and yet have no fruit!

Unfruitfulness is always a sin and it is sin that carries God's curse just as Jesus cursed this tree!

Unfruitfulness means uselessness to God!

Jesus said of this fig tree "No man eat fruit of thee hereafter for ever".

On this day Jesus wept over Jerusalem. As Christians we need to make every effort to make sure that Jesus does not one day weep over us as individuals!

The Jews, in the time of Christ, professed a proud religion, but that profession could not then and cannot now produce fruit acceptable to God!

So Jesus goes to the Temple, He still had work to do before the cross.

*****Mar 11:15 And they come to Jerusalem: and Jesus went into the temple, and began to cast out them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves;
Mar 11:16 And would not suffer that any man should carry any vessel through the temple.
Mar 11:17 And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.

In this day of Jesus, the Court of the Gentiles had been converted into a market but the entire Temple complex was supposed to be sacred.

The Jews had no use for Gentiles and no respect for the "Court of the Gentiles".

Jesus quotes again from the Book of Isaiah:

Isa 56:7 "Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer": their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer "for all people".

The entire Temple compound was considered holy, but it became increasingly more holy as one entered farther in, from east to west until finally the Holy of Holies was reached.

King Herod had enclosed the outer court with a colonnade and it was referred to as the Court of the Gentiles.

Because the "gentiles" (non-Jews) were not permitted to enter the Temple area, they could walk within those colonnade but they were forbidden to go any further than that outer court.

This area, "the court of the Gentiles" was actually a place for Gentiles who had converted to Judaism, to come to worship the Living God of Israel.

They were excluded from entering into any of the inner courts, and warning signs in Greek and Latin were placed that gave them warning that the penalty for such trespass was death.

The Romans permitted the Jewish authorities to carry out the death penalty for only this one offence, even if the offender were a Roman citizen.

It was for this alleged crime that Paul was attacked and nearly beaten to death by an angry crowd during his last visit to Jerusalem (Acts 21:27-32).

But, this is also the same area mentioned in the Book of Revelation:

Rev 11:2 But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

This is the area where Jesus overthrew tables and chairs and cast out those that bought and sold.

The Temple complex was not to be a market or a mall, it was to be a house of worship!

And, Jesus would not allow anyone to go further into the Temple complex while taking a vessel with them.

The Temple complex was not to be some tourists attraction, but a house of prayer to all people!

Even in the human world there is still such thing as right and wrong!

God's house is still Holy Ground!

This was still a Temple for God's people to worship!

This was still an area or a court outside the Temple where the rights of God's people were being trampled upon!

And it is a fact, we simply cannot allow the World inside the Church or it will become a mall or just some attraction!

The measuring stick for the World is still the "Moral Laws of God", the Ten Commandments!

That first measurement is still these words: "Thou shalt have no other gods before me"!

God's House is still to be a house of prayer for all nations!

It is thieves that rob God and thieves are still thieves even when they deal with their own kind!

By the way, The Lord Jesus Christ, even in His flesh, was not some wimp!

He manhandled this group of thieves and none tried to over come Him!

As Christians, we cannot be wimps!

****Mar 11:18 And the scribes and chief priests heard it, and sought how they might destroy him: for they feared him, because all the people was astonished at his doctrine.

The triumphal entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem had shown the power He had over these poor and abused people.

Even many more were astonished at the things He had done at the Temple.

And many more looked upon the Lord Jesus as the Messiah which He truly was!

But there were those that looked upon Jesus as a hero, who could stand against the Pharisee and Sadducee's.

It is all these things that brought fear to this false and abused religious system!

So, these enemies along with the scribes and elders of Israel counseled together to kill Jesus.

Jesus was not concerned with their counsel because He had come to die at their hands and they had not realized this.

*****Mar 11:19 And when even was come, he went out of the city.
Mar 11:20 And in the morning, as they passed by, they saw the fig tree dried up from the roots.
Mar 11:21 And Peter calling to remembrance saith unto him, Master, behold, the fig tree which thou cursedst is withered away.
Mar 11:22 And Jesus answering saith unto them, Have faith in God.
Mar 11:23 For verily I say unto you, That whosoever shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; and shall not doubt in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.
Mar 11:24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.
Mar 11:25 And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.
Mar 11:26 But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.

True "Faith" begins when we take God at His Word!

When God speaks of things that are unknown to us, we must still believe God!

When God says things that we believe are unlikely to happen, we must still obey God!

But, God will test our "Faith" from time to time. Faith that is untested may not be real.

When Jesus invites us to trust on Him, we must accept Him as He is, which is the truth!

How can we obtain this faith?

Eph 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

God will give us enough "faith" to begin our walk with Jesus as a free gift!

Rom 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Our "faith" will increase by studying and listening to the Word of God!

1Jn 5:1 Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.

Our "Faith" must then come from our own heart!

Rom 10:10 For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

And it is this sort of "faith" that can move mountains!

How can we know our prayers will be answered?

"What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, "believe that ye receive them", and ye shall have them".

What can stop our prayers from being answered?

"But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses".

And Jesus returned again to the Temple.

*****Mar 11:27 And they come again to Jerusalem: and as he was walking in the temple, there come to him the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders,
Mar 11:28 And say unto him, By what authority doest thou these things? and who gave thee this authority to do these things?
Mar 11:29 And Jesus answered and said unto them, I will also ask of you one question, and answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things.
Mar 11:30 The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or of men? answer me.
Mar 11:31 And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why then did ye not believe him?
Mar 11:32 But if we shall say, Of men; they feared the people: for all men counted John, that he was a prophet indeed.
Mar 11:33 And they answered and said unto Jesus, We cannot tell. And Jesus answering saith unto them, Neither do I tell you by what authority I do these things.

Jesus Christ brought a power into the world that the world had never seen!

His power was revealed in His Words and also in His Works!

Only the Church has this power today, but still "only through the Words and Works of Jesus"!

The world misses the most important point that our Bible makes!

If God had not revealed Himself, there would not even be a discussion about the truth today!

The fact that God revealed Himself makes theology possible!

God has not only revealed Himself through His creation and has given us His record of creation in the Book of Genesis, but God has also revealed Himself in the Person of Jesus Christ!

Rom 16:25 Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,
Rom 16:26 But now is made manifest, and by the scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the everlasting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of faith:

Luk 2:30 For mine eyes have seen thy salvation,
Luk 2:31 Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people;
Luk 2:32 A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

This why we as Christians must be "unyielding" to the world we live in, with our celebration of Christmas along with all things about Jesus Christ!

God has told us so many things about Himself that we could never have known!

The Bibles says:

Psa 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork.
Psa 19:2 Day unto day uttereth speech, and night unto night sheweth knowledge.
Psa 19:3 There is no speech nor language, where their voice is not heard.
Psa 19:4 Their line is gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them hath he set a tabernacle for the sun,
Psa 19:5 Which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoiceth as a strong man to run a race.
Psa 19:6 His going forth is from the end of the heaven, and his circuit unto the ends of it: and there is nothing hid from the heat thereof.

Verse 2 says God reveals Himself continually day to day, night to night this is 24/7.

And it is because of sin that God had to reveal Himself in this special way!

God had to reveal the only means of salvation to this sinful world.

Jesus Christ is displayed throughout the scriptures from Genesis through Revelation!

Jesus Christ is the only One who can explain the work of God:

Joh 1:18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him.

Jesus gave us His words to reveal the Father!

Joh 6:63 It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

Jesus gave us His works to reveal the Father!

Joh 5:36 But I have greater witness than that of John: for the works which the Father hath given me to finish, the same works that I do, bear witness of me, that the Father hath sent me.

Jesus Christ is the radiance of God's Glory!

Heb 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;

Without God revealing Himself in His Word, we would never have known much about Him!

Jas 1:18 Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
Jas 1:19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
Jas 1:20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.

Jas 2:8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

Jas 2:23 And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

Jas 4:5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
Jas 4:6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
Jas 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

We will all be judged by the Word of God because of this!

Jas 2:12 So speak ye, and so do, as they that shall be judged by the law of liberty.

This is the "authority" that Jesus had revealed to the world in His 33 years on this earth!

These chief priests, these scribes, and these elders had witnessed many these things personally and they already had the Words God had given to them by Moses and all the prophets.

The works of Jesus had preceded Him everywhere He went!

The entire world was talking about Jesus Christ!

But, God does not need our permission to do the things He does, He just ask us to "Trust" Him and "Believe"!

To claim ignorance from the Word of God, and ignore the truth, will only open the doors of Hell!

Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

The Bible still says:

Job 5:13 He taketh the wise in their own craftiness: and the counsel of the froward is carried headlong.

This is the choice we must all make before we die!

The Prediction Of God's Servant

The Prediction Of God's Servant

"Death and Resurrection"

Book of Mark Chapter 10:17-52

In His teaching Jesus had left little doubt that words recorded in the Book of Genesis were the truth of the Word of God and stood above any man-made laws. Many opportunities are lost when people harden their hearts to the truth of God's Word or when they wear blinders to the commandments of God.

Jesus had told the disciples that unless a person became as a little child, that is with faith and humility, that person could not enter into the kingdom of Heaven.

So how had the disciples responded to this teaching?

They had rebuked the parents of small children for bringing those children into the presence of the Lord, so it seems they did not yet understand that we all must come to Jesus as children.

And again Jesus had said: "Suffer the little children, and forbid them not"

God will never go against His Own Word!

We now find Our Lord continuing His journey to the cross and just as He gets started a "rich young ruler" comes to the Lord desiring knowledge of salvation.

Let's begin:

*****Mar 10:17 And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?

There is one thing that needs to be pointed out:

Joh 2:24 But Jesus did not commit himself unto them, because he knew all men,
Joh 2:25 And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man.

"Deception" has no covering before the Lord!

Jesus stopped to listen to this one who came running to Him.

What was he seeking of the Lord, or what was his claim?

He asked: "What shall I do to inherit eternal life"!

Those words "Good Master" show us that this young man thought of the Lord Jesus only as a "Good Teacher".

Luke wrote that this young man was already a ruler of the Jewish people. He probably had inherited this position along with his riches. He would not have been a ruler in the synagogue.

This young man had realized one certain thing in his early years? There is life beyond the days we live in this physical body!

But he had not realized that eternal life is not a possession or a property that can be bought!

Eternal life is an inheritance given as a gift, not earned! (Eph 2:8-9)

The soul is eternal! Eternal life is with God! Eternal damnation is without God!

The secret to human perfection, while we are still living, is absolute dependence upon the Lord Jesus Christ for all things especially "eternal life"!

*****Mar 10:18 And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.
What is being "good"?

To be good, is to be complete, having physical qualities adapted to good use, morally correct in the eyes of God, and being "real" not a deceiver.

Jesus "did not say" He, Himself was not good!

Jesus "did say" that there was only One who is good and that is God!

At one time, before Lucifer's failure and before the fall of man, all God's creation was good, in fact "very good".

Gen 1:31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was "very good". And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

But when sin entered into our world that left the only "good thing" to be God!

But to each believer, whatever sin we inherited from Adam, God looks on us now, "not" as we were in Adam but now as we are in The Lord Jesus Christ!

Eph 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;
Eph 4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
Eph 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Jesus had not been to the cross, so to the Jew were given the commandments to judge their own goodness!

There are those that say these commandments do not apply to us today but what do they do with this verse?

Tit 2:12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;
Tit 2:13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ;

It is those same 10 commandments that still teach us about goodness!

We have only two options in this world!

1) We can live a lifestyle of ungodliness and worldly lust.

2) Or, We can live soberly, self-controlled, watchful-cautious, righteously, and godly.

To live godly is to obey the first 4 of those 10 commandments!

To live righteously is to do right by our fellow man by the last 6 of those 10 commandments!

The Apostle Paul wrote these words to Titus, who was a Gentile he had led to the Lord and was a preacher and minister to the New Testament church in Crete.

The 10 commandments are still our "measuring stick" for living right in this world!

They will never become outdated!

*****Mar 10:19 Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother.

As I have said, the moral law is found principally in the 10 Commandments!

The 10 Commandments are listed in two categories:

1) Man's relationship with God, the first 4 commandments.

2.) Man's relationship with man, the last 6 commandments.

The moral laws begin with "I AM THE LORD"!

So the standard or the measurement for the moral laws must be based on the "character" of God!

Gal 3:24 Wherefore the law was our "schoolmaster" to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
Gal 3:25 But after that "faith" is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
Gal 3:26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

Jesus mentioned only the last 6 commandments to this young ruler.

How did he respond?

*****Mar 10:20 And he answered and said unto him, Master, all these have I observed from my youth.

Here again this young man said the word "Master". He should have realized that he was speaking to the divine Son of God!

This would be his downfall.

What are the greatest of commandments?

Mat 22:37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Mat 22:38 "This is the first and great commandment".
Mat 22:39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Mat 22:40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

So what had this young man lacked?

*****Mar 10:21 Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

We should first notice here that even those that are not ready to give up their old life and their old man, are still loved by the Lord Jesus Christ!

But, Jesus already knew where his fault laid!

What is the one thing that every lost soul lacks?

Act 2:21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of "the Lord" shall be saved.

If we do not have "faith" that the Lord is who He says He is, then we cannot be saved under any circumstances!

Heb 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

How can we be disciples of the Lord?

Luk 14:26 If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
Luk 14:27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

What is a disciple?

Those that accept the "Gospel of The Lord Jesus" as the truth, are the only ones who can be His disciples!

The Apostle Paul said:

Php 3:7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.

What was the one thing this young man lacked?

We must love God above all things!

The world continues to stumble over these words of Christ Jesus:

Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

What is the main problem with the youth today?

Just as this rich young ruler, "our youth are caught up in an overwhelming affection for the things of this world"!

Riches are their idol!

Their hearts are set on the things they see in this world!

They trust in things they can see!

God's number one rule says "Thou shalt have no other gods before me"!

So, what is "taking up our own cross"?

The cross is an instrument of death but the cross can also denote severe affliction and trials while living!

The cross was the instrument of the slave's death in the time of Jesus and not many rich and powerful men have ever been crucified!

To bare our own cross in this world is to carry the curse of man-made laws!

BUT, when we pickup our own cross and follow the Lord Jesus, He will transform that curse into a blessing!

Gal 3:13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:
Gal 3:14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

So, what was the response of this young man?

*****Mar 10:22 And he was sad at that saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.

The love of accumulation is a principle embedded in our nature by this world we live in.

This young man had already acknowledged his belief in life after death. So the only true investment we can make while we yet live, is an investment in eternity!

Everything done for the Glory of God is like something planted in another world!

It is a deposit that will appear again in our future!

No matter how much we accumulate in this world it can only last one life time!

So too, any affliction that comes from bearing our own cross and following Jesus cannot last more than our lifetime!

These things are only for a moment when compared to eternity!

2Co 4:17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory;
2Co 4:18 While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

This young man did not have his heart in the right place!

Mat 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

The Lord Jesus used this real life story to teach the chosen 12 disciples.

*****Mar 10:23 And Jesus looked round about, and saith unto his disciples, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
Mar 10:24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
Mar 10:25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.

We should clearly understand that Jesus was stressing the "impossibility" of receiving eternal life, while still holding onto personal reservations or conditions of any kind.

There are some that believe that Jesus was referring to a small entrance gate known as the "needle's eye" but this does not seem to be true.

1) No matter how outwardly righteous a person may be, he can only come to Jesus Christ bringing nothing of his own!

We may not even be asked to give up all our possessions, and most are not, but we all must at least willing to do so.

Until we are saved, "we are the living dead" because of our sin!

True life only exist in Christ Jesus!

2) Jesus had said that a camel could no more easily go through the eye of a sewing needle, than a rich man trusting in his own riches, enter the kingdom of God.

Both these things are impossible!

Those that are "willing" to give up all things in this life are then "poor" and Jesus says:

Luk 6:20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, "Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God".

The disciples were astonished at these words Jesus was teaching.

*****Mar 10:26 And they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, Who then can be saved?
Mar 10:27 And Jesus looking upon them saith, With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible.

It is a fact that those that are preoccupied by the world will not make room for God!

It is also a fact that those that look to this world for their answers are in the greatest danger of losing their souls!

Salvation must be desirable!

Salvation is then the deliverance from condemnation and the placing of us in God's Kingdom!

AND, Unbelief is the cause of rejecting God's terms of salvation!

While we are lost we are astonished at how easy our merciful God has made salvation, through the Lord Jesus Christ.

Once we are saved, we wonder how we were ever seen worthy enough to receive God's "Grace"!

Man by himself cannot overcome these difficulties of salvation, it is impossible!

But Praise the Lord, Salvation was never to be intended as man's work, but God's work!

And Jesus said, "it is finished"!

Where do most fail to come to know the Lord?

1) They see the Word of God as mysterious.
2) They see the sacrifices of salvation to be too painful.
3) They see the obedience to the Word of God as unnatural.
4) They only see duties to be performed and not blessings that are received.
5) They see what the world thinks of God's people and they fear for their lives.

They do not see the strength that is in Jesus!

But God says those that endure to the end shall be saved!

And God adds:

Jer 32:27 Behold, I am the LORD, the God of all flesh: is there any thing too hard for me?

When think we can save ourselves, we will never understand what is to be lost!

But, Peter began to understand.

*****Mar 10:28 Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee.

Peter had never been a rich man but he had left his only means to become rich in this world behind and followed the Lord Jesus Christ. In fact he had left all things behind for he had no means to provide for his own family. We never hear that this family did without!

Matthew added these words:

Mat 19:27 Then answered Peter and said unto him, Behold, we have forsaken all, and followed thee; "what shall we have therefore"?

And the Lord Jesus answered.

*****Mar 10:29 And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's,
Mar 10:30 But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.
Mar 10:31 But many that are first shall be last; and the last first.

What is our sacrifice, if asked?

To give up the whole world and all it's goods and if possible to give those things to the poor.

What is our action?

To follow the Lord Jesus Christ, He being the example for our new life!

What is our reward?

Following the Lord Jesus Christ would bring joy in this present life which is an hundred times better than all those things that are mentioned.

But there would also be persecutions in this new life.

But there is a "better world" coming to those that believe and follow the Lord and in it we will live forever with much greater joy!

Matthew added some other things:

Mat 19:28 And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
Mat 19:29 And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my name's sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life.

What is the regeneration?

The word "regeneration" only appears twice in the New Testament.

1) When referring to the prophecy of renewed the world in the time of the Second Coming of the Messiah, when the Lord Jesus will sit as King. Here in our verse.

2) When referring to the rebirth of a redeemed person.

Tit 3:4 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared,
Tit 3:5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;
Tit 3:6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour;
Tit 3:7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Regeneration is separate from conversion. Conversion must take place first before there can be regeneration.

At the Second Coming of Christ Jesus and by the end of "Jacob's trouble", Israel will have accepted the Lord Jesus as the true Messiah.

This will be the time that brings with it, the fulfillment of the Palestinian Covenant.

Zec 12:9 And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
Zec 12:10 And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

Zec 14:9 And the LORD shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one LORD, and his name one.

It is at this time when the Son of Man shall sit in the throne of His Glory and those chosen 12, not including Judas, will sit on 12 thrones, judging the tribes of Israel by the completed Word of God!

The Jews, who had been the most distinguished people of God, but have rejected the Lord Jesus Christ and therefore have been rejected by Christ Jesus, until the regeneration of Israel. Therefore the first will be last.

The Gentiles, who received the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior, who were heathen in the eyes of the Jew, but saved by "Grace" during the Church Age, before the Great Tribulation Period and before the Millennial reign of Christ, will therefore be first. The last will become the first!

In the Book of Matthew, Jesus confirms this thought with the parables of the kingdom.

But it is also a fact that during the Church Age, many will be called but only few will be chosen.

After these things were taught, Jesus continued on His way to Jerusalem and that Cross on Calvary's Mountain.

*****Mar 10:32 And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,

Why were they afraid?

Jesus Christ showed no fear and was Himself, leading this group to Jerusalem.

Isa 50:7 For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.

Jesus had told them what would happen to Him in Jerusalem and He would tell them again.

If these things were to happen to Jesus the Messiah, then they were thinking, "what would happen to them"!

John the Baptist had been murdered.

And Jesus was to be murdered.

They were afraid of their own safety!

They did not yet trust Jesus when He had said that they would build the Church, because they did not yet understand what building the Church meant!

Jesus did not want them to be afraid and this fear did not keep them from following the Lord Jesus.

So, Jesus again, explains what will happen to Him in Jerusalem.

*****Mar 10:33 Saying, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem; and the Son of man shall be delivered unto the chief priests, and unto the scribes; and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles:
Mar 10:34 And they shall mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall spit upon him, and shall kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.

What would happen to Jesus at Jerusalem?

Jesus did not leave out the ugly details.

1) Jesus had previously told His disciples what would happen to Him but now He tells them these things will take place in the Holy City of Jerusalem.

2) Jesus said He would first be delivered to the chief priests or the High Priest of the Jews. Then the scribes, the ones who hand wrote the Word of God and were the legal side of the Law.

It is these Jews that condemned Our Lord to death.

3) For the first time Jesus teaches that He would be next delivered to the Gentiles, where His sentence of death would be carried out.

4) The Gentiles would mock Him.

Psa 22:6 But I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and despised of the people.
Psa 22:7 All they that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head, saying,
Psa 22:8 He trusted on the LORD that he would deliver him: let him deliver him, seeing he delighted in him.

Psa 22:13 They gaped upon me with their mouths, as a ravening and a roaring lion.

5) The Gentiles would scourge Him.

Isa 52:14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

6) Jesus would be spat upon.

Isa 50:6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

7) Then they would kill our Lord.

Isa 53:8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.
Isa 53:9 And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

8) Then Jesus said on third day after His death, He would rise again.

Psa 16:10 For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
Psa 16:11 Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

All of them still believed that upon His rising Jesus would then sit on His throne as King and Jesus had already said that His disciples would sit upon 12 thrones to judge Israel.

They believed they would sit and judge, just as the Old Testament judges had done:

Deu 16:18 Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, throughout thy tribes: and they shall judge the people with just judgment.

So some thought maybe we can sit next to the Lord.

*****Mar 10:35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.
Mar 10:36 And he said unto them, What would ye that I should do for you?
Mar 10:37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.

They just pushed aside the reason why the Lord had come to die because they did not understand that Jesus was the sacrifice, the "Lamb of God"!

James and John knew that Jesus was the Christ, the Messiah as did they all.

BUT, the Church Age was still a mystery to all these disciples at this time:

Eph 3:2 If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward:
Eph 3:3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote afore in few words,
Eph 3:4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)
Eph 3:5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
Eph 3:6 That the Gentiles should be fellowheirs, and of the same body, and partakers of his promise in Christ by the gospel:
Eph 3:7 Whereof I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me by the effectual working of his power.

Col 1:26 Even the mystery which hath been hid from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints:
Col 1:27 To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory:

Matthew wrote about it this way:

Mat 20:20 Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him.

We can see that this mother and these disciples were still looking forward to the Millennial reign of Christ which they believed would take place upon Christ's resurrection.

They were expecting the pomp and glory of an earthly king!

To sit on either side of an earthly king, would be a place of the highest honor of men and would show that they were truly His friends.

BUT, this was not the kingdom that the Lord had been teaching about at this time!

And Jesus said:

*****Mar 10:38 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

Ye know not what you ask?

We know that James was the first Apostle to be martyred!

We know that John was the last of the Apostles to die, and the only one to die of natural causes.

But they both had to drink of the same cup!

What is in the cup of the Lord?

There is the cup of joy.

There is the cup of of salvation.

There is also the cup of affliction.

BUT, The cup of the Lord is many times a bitter cup containing sin and wrath!

This cup can sometimes be deep and wide!

This cup can sometimes be torment!

And, it is this cup that is prepared for every believer!

But, no one can do the things that Christ did for us and no one can suffer the way Christ suffered for us!

So, we must drink of that cup called fellowship, with Him!

The most important ingredient in that cup is salvation:

Psa 116:13 I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.

For that cup to be a blessing that cup must contain the blood of Jesus!

For that cup to be a blessing that cup must contain the bread of life!

1Co 10:16 The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?

That cup must contain the Lord's baptism!

Rom 6:3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death?
Rom 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

And Jesus added:

*****Mar 10:39 And they said unto him, We can. And Jesus said unto them, 'Ye shall indeed drink of the cup that I drink of; and with the baptism that I am baptized withal shall ye be baptized':
Mar 10:40 But to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared.

To put this in context:

Joh 14:1 Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.
Joh 14:2 In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. "I go to prepare a place for you".

We know that Jesus has returned to Heaven and He says He has gone to prepare a place for every believer.
There will be room for everyone that has the faith of [Hebrews 11:6] and a specific place prepared for each one that has followed the Lord.

That Heavenly place prepared for each of us in Heaven, then cannot be altered by any request we make while still living on this Earth!

If I trust the Lord for my salvation, surely I can trust that the Lord will place me where He chooses, especially in Heaven!

Why would I ever want to change what my Lord has done for me, when I know that He knows best?

What ever God has prepared for us in Heaven will be given to us when we get there!

Mat 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
Mat 6:20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
Mat 6:21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

1Ti 6:18 That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate;
1Ti 6:19 Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

James and John, just as ourselves, can only have the things in Heaven that are prepared specifically for us.

But we cannot imagine what God has prepared!

1Co 2:9 But as it is written, "Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him".

Let's just allow God to give us the things that He chooses! Amen

So Jesus must clarify some things with them all.

*****Mar 10:41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be much displeased with James and John.
Mar 10:42 But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.
Mar 10:43 But so shall it not be among you: but whosoever will be great among you, shall be your minister:
Mar 10:44 And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all.
Mar 10:45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.

The Lord gave James and John an answer but we are wrong to condemn them for asking.

The world teaches us that prominent places are secured by those who strive against one another and in many cases those who put forth the greatest effort in shrewdness and artful maneuvering!

In many countries the most prominent places are taken by force!

When mankind is left to itself, and reject God, the systems they put in place will be as lords and monarchs over the people!

These things are raging in America today, as one group tries to out maneuver the other group in every way possible!

The one principle of this type of organization, is that each one will try to monopolize position and power to gain rule over the masses!

This is the thoughts of Satan!

But those that think that this principle will extend into our future world do not understand what eternal life is all about.

We will not be striving to outdo one another because this is not the mind of Christ!

A quick look at Christ reveals these things:

Php 2:5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Php 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God:
Php 2:7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:
Php 2:8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

To serve the Lord Jesus Christ is to retain ambition but Jesus did not say not to seek greatness!

Jesus did say it was best to seek to be the greatest servant!

We can see that this is a reversal of the role of authority!

What is being humble?

Humble is "truly maximum power" under "complete control"!

This is the power, symbolized by a baby Jesus, wrapped in swaddling clothes, in the arms of His mother Mary but still in control of this cosmos He created.

Paul wrote these words:

2Co 8:9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich.

God descended from His throne, so that all those bound in sin can ascend to His throne!

This is the greatest sign of His love, not the authority He has over His created world!

Rom 5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

To be a Christian, is to not seek a way to obtain something for ourselves!

God's "Grace" is a gift freely given to those that believe!

The most irresistible power in this world is unselfishness!

Self-sacrifice reaches it's greatness, when it is seen as gain!

Our leaders no longer desire to serve but only to rule and this will be all our downfall!

Jesus said, "whosoever will be chiefest of all, shall be servant of all".

And Jesus continues on to Jerusalem.

*****Mar 10:46 And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging.
Mar 10:47 And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me.

In the time of Joshua, Jericho was the most important city in the Jordan valley and the key to Canaan land, at least until those walls came tumbling down.

In the time of Jesus, Jericho was still an important city because it was located on the trade routes and it was celebrated for it's palm trees.

Bartimaeus was a blind beggar who sat on this well traveled road in hope of an alms.

An alms in most cases was money but could also be food or clothing or other things of value.

Today we would say charity.

["Son of David"], Why was Jesus called the 'Son of David"?

Isaiah was a great prophet of Israel for more than 60 years and the Church is also indebted to this prophet.

Even Isaiah was a "type of Christ":

Isa 20:2 At the same time spake the LORD by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying, Go and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put off thy shoe from thy foot. And he did so, walking naked and barefoot.
Isa 20:3 And the LORD said, Like as my servant Isaiah hath walked naked and barefoot three years for a sign and wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia;

Here we see a "type" as Isaiah walked 3 years barefooted in his own ministry.

But Isaiah was also inspired by the Holy Ghost to write for us many things.

Among these things we find this passage:

Isa 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots:

This entire chapter of Isaiah, tells us of the Hebrew Messiah.

The Messiah, The Christ, was to be born out of the house of David, the beloved king of Israel.

Even blind Bartimaeus clearly realized that Jesus was the Messiah, a son of David!

Because there was another scripture:

Mat 2:23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.

The name Nazareth meant "sprout" or "shoot" and in Isaiah we read that the Messiah would be a "stem".

As David sprang from the humble family of Jesse, so the Messiah was to rise from humble beginnings.

Jesus was not recognized as coming from the stately house of David, but only "an insignificant spout" from the "roots" of Jesse and a "despised" Nazarene.

Bartimaeus knew something else.

*****Mar 10:48 And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me.
Mar 10:49 And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee.
Mar 10:50 And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus.

Bartimaeus was not ashamed to call on the Lord Jesus Christ and showed great "faith" that Jesus was who He said He was.

Those that rebuked Bartimaeus had not accepted that Jesus was the Messiah!

We should ask ourselves, How do we get the attention of the Lord Jesus Christ?

Bartimaeus cried out to Jesus!
Bartimaeus was persistent, refusing to be silenced and this is when Jesus stood still!

Jesus called for Bartimaeus to come to Him.
Bartimaeus threw away everything that hindered his walk to the Lord, and went to Jesus!

This is a picture of what it takes for anyone seeking the Lord Jesus Christ!

Bartimaeus was blind, poor, a beggar, and he was lost until He heard about Jesus!

And Jesus asked:

*****Mar 10:51 And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.

What would you like for Me to do for you?

In order to commune with Christ Jesus we must draw near to Him!

We cannot follow the Lord from afar off!

When we walk near to the Lord we will find that God's "Grace" is always larger than our desires!

It is very possible that Christ will provide according to our asking!

Jesus Christ always knows what we want and He also already knows what He will do!

It is these very things that should make us realize that every prayer is important and pointless prayers may go unanswered.

Bartimaeus knew exactly what he wanted!

But, Jesus Christ knew exactly what Bartimaeus needed!

*****Mar 10:52 And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

When we look upon the Lord Jesus Christ as the author of our faith, we will also find that He is the finisher of our faith!

What was the response of Bartimaeus?

He immediately received his sight and became a follower of Jesus.

This is the response that every lost soul that sees Jesus Christ as the Savior needs to have!

Joh 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

BUT, this is the truth that is rejected by the world we live in!
